Ej22/brumby conversion (yep another one)

Post by chridk » Tue Jan 17, 2006 9:19 pm

Hi folks, spent alot of time reading this site gathering info, got a few questions. I have 97mod ej22 liberty running gear to go into my 92 brumby and am wondering what the best speedo option is,(liberty cluster is a touch to big for brumby dash). Please note its electronic.

Also wiring harness, best place to get it preped ?.Bris area north.

Fuel lines, is it best to run them under the cab or follow the original lines through the cab, planning on mounting the surge tank on the back of the cab under the tray.

Finally would like to use liberty steering collum with the indicator & wiper controls. remember seeing pics of this somewhere on the old board?how hard is this ?.

Please forgive if i have asked any stupid questions here, but as my old boss told me"its better to ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake".

Your help will be much appreciated.

Awesome. It's great to have some questions from someone who's done their research.

Can't answer the speedo question sorry.

Sunspares (our sponsor) prep wiring harnesses. I don't think it's too expensive, less than $150.00?

Follow the original fuel lines, there has been some debate in the past as to use the OE ones and how it can be done. I'm using the standard carby fuel lines (upgraded all rubber to EFI spec) in my EJ20 L series with no issues at all.

Fitting the EJ column etc is not a simple job by any means - It may mean splicing in parts of the EJ body harness. I have had no issues with my EA series one. Is there a specific reason you want to use the Liberty unit?
Monster Subaru sold to a good home!! Still a Subaru owner. Will try stay in the Ausubaru loop. Sorry

Thnaks for the reply mudrat, the main reason i want to fit the steering collum is that i would like to 3 speeds on the wipers,( i realize this may require a wiper motor change),and also would like to use cruise control in the future in the liberty steering wheel.

Its the little things that make driving the brumby that bit more plesurable and also seeing in the pouring rain helps.

Love your work STi typeR, this was the pics i remember seeing, also remember some crash pics,(if its the same car ?).

Was this convertion done by the subaru shop at brendale, or was it done elsewhere. Any idea on what it cost for electrical work on dash & column, also did the inside of the dash have to be scolluped out (in the top) to fit the fozza cluster.
The only thing that i will differ for me is that i'm using a 5spd d/r,so no auto display needed.

I have a spare dash to practice fitting clusters luckly.

Thanks mate .

Can't say where the origional conversion was done. i bought a wreck with it all done and transferred it into a new shell.

no you don't need to scollape out the top of the dash. a custom fibreglass surround was made that fits the cluster and gets rid of the brumby switches.

my car uses basically the whole of the ej20t wiring harness. including the engine and interior fuse boxes. with the back wiring for taillights etc. matted to the later plug. Doesn't seem like a bad way to do it especially if you want to fit the later column.

Later column fits it fairly easy with plates made up to bolt it in the origional brumby location. My brumby also has the later model forester rack fitted as well.

AH yes the mud is becoming more clear now in my head,

I was wondering weather the EJ rack would fit the EA xmember.
Does the rack bolt straight in and do you need to shorten the tie
rod ends.

would prefer to use as much of the donor car as posible
that way i've got a rough idea of its life span, the EA P/S
crossmember i've got came from an 83 wagon i think, don't
know how much work its done,it looks straight & clean though.

While i'm at it whats the best engine mounts to use, the EJ ones
overhang the front of the EA xmember by about 15-20mm, from
memory tasbrat used EA82 ones, I think ? at the moment i've
only got EA81 & EJ22 mounts, can anyone help !!!.
