4WD Conversion

Post by subyleone » Tue Nov 04, 2008 6:13 am

I have a 1984 MY Leone. FWD with an EA71. I have all I need for a 4WD Conversion (I Think). The gearbox is from an EA81/82 (Im not sure wich) Will it fit up to my motor or do I need another one?

thro up a pic of your gearbox and we can tell you whats it is....if its a ea81 you'll be right and it will fit up....i cant for the life of me remember if ea82 box will fit an ea71 motor(i dont think it will tho).....unless the motor is really good have you thought about an upgrade to ea81 motor if you have an ea81 box?....other option without playing with ecu's is an ea82 motor n box....little bit of stuffing around but worth it...better off and on road....were are you?..maybe someone is close enough to come see what you have and give some ideas

I am in the midle of nowhere in New Zealand. I have thought bout an upgrade just dont quite have the money atm. Car I got it off is at a mates one wich died, now its tipped upside down and completely stripped. I Think he might still have the block of the motor somewhere, could have a look what it is next time i am there. So if it is an EA81 box then it will fit up to an EA71?

For the conversion you will need, gearbox, driveshaft (tailshaft), c.v's, the rear hubs, gearbox mounts and crossmember, and that should be about it i think.

Someone will correct me if im wrong anyway!

from memory and its been a long time since i did anything MY it will bolt up.....there will be some minor mods you'll havt to do going from front wheel drive to 4x4...gearbox cross member being one i had to do when i did the same convertion...have you got the drivesahft and rear diff...cv's...well the whole 4x4 rear end to put in?..the front swaybar comes to mind too for some reason to do with exhaust but i can remember why...it was a long time ago i did mine...i took everything out of a 4x4 wagon and put it into an MY sedan then lifted it 4 inches...was a beast

Subyleone where is the starter motor on your EA71? If it is a top mount starter I do not think you will be able to fit a EA81/82 gearbox. EA81/82 engined models have the starter located on the side.
