L series 5 speed conversion to my MY 91.

I have searched and found out almost all the information I need to do the conversion in my Brumby but their are a couple questions i need to ask for some clarification.
1. Gear levers an linkages to the gearbox.
Can the MY parts be modified to fit the L series box or is it best to use the L series gearleavers and linkages and adapt the L series parts to the MY body?

2. Clutch Cable.
Is it best to use the L series cable or the MY Part?
I am a little confused on this point as some suggest that I also need the L series pedal box. Does the L series pedal box bolt into the MY or do I just Need the Pedal Assembally?

3.
If using the Lseries 2 peice prop shaft, how and where on the MY do I mount the centre Bearing?

4.
I have the Lseries spedo cable will this fit the MY speedo or will i be able to replace the MY speedo for the Lseries speedo? If so Does an L series speedo fit in alright?

Cheers for any help!!

Hey Callum,

1. Use the "L" linkages. We all seem to do slightly different things mounting them to the body, from nothing(there is a little stud just behind the hole in the My body that the linkage just reached!) to elaberate rubber mounts.
You'll work something out!

2. The "MY" cable is too short, use the "L" one.
Were the cable attaches to the pedal is very adaptable as well. it can be made to fit the "MY" pedal or the pedal can be changed. Changing the pedal lines the cable up correctly whereas just attaching it to the "MY" pedal it wont be quite inline.
I just attached to the "MY" pedal so i'm not sure wether it was better to change just the pedal, or the whole pedal box.

3. I cut some 25x3 steel brackets about 100mm long and bolted them to the bearing, put it in there, held it up in place and marked it, then pulled the carpets back , drilled and fited some reinforcing(Big thick washer as minimum)
But if i remember correctly the 100mm was way to much, don't recall how long the ended up.

4. I used my "MY" cable. But, i believe that ALL Subaru speedo cables are interchangable!
There are different lengths, and the "EJs" had a metal section at the box end, but all the cable i've seen have the same ends.
I have an "MY" cable in my Liberty.

1. I used the L box shifters - glad to discard the MY shifters I can tell you!! Ditto with the little M^ bolt or stud with a rubber mount. I had to slowly trim back bits of the tunnel hole to make things fit without catching on floor.

2. I used L series clutch cable & adapted the pedal box with a spacer on the outer side of the pedal box to line up cable. Ignore the L series pedal box tip as they do not just bolt in

3. I copied someone in here for centre bearing. Flat bar 50mm wide by 3 or 4mm thick. One from each side. Removed seats and floor tar sheet. I think fitted rear of the front cross hump where front of front seats bolt to floor. Used a string line from rear diff to back of gearbox to help line up. Word was that if you could find a 80's rear wheel drive Mazda 626 it had a centre bearing holder that mods up nicely and loks factory

4.I used same MY speedo cable. Looking at the two model speedo heads I don't think any easy swap will happen. I have hacked an MY to bits in an attempt to fit L tacho besoide speedo and IT IS ONE BIG MESS shoved aside for another day

Cheers

This weekend just gone we "mounted" the gearbox in the brumby and i am just wondering which way the brackets go onto the gearbox because their is a small an a big bracket? and I think I fitted them the wrong way. I have the shallow bracket fitted to the right side and with that large lump ground off the top rear of the gearbox the clearance between the box and the car body is small. That is I have the deep bracket fitted to the left side and plenty of clearance there between the box and car body.

p.s. is there a special knack to removing a brumby clutch pedal and MY clutch cable, so that i can prepare to fit the L series clutch cable?

cheers callum! :)

several ways of doing the box xmember. dunno if my write up is still out there in cyberworld. I used the MY cross member and MY gearbox mounts. Left stays left, right stays right. Where these mounts bolt to the box the difference is in the centre to centre measures from L to MY. Elongate the holes further up (for top hole) and down (for the lower hole) on one side, and the other side gets the elongation going inwards towards each other. Look at all of what you got and you should understand.

The big hammer does good for reshaping tunnel from under for more clearance where you cut the threaded boos off the box at the rear on drivers side up top near the access plate.

I pulled the whole pedal box out for ease or mounting etc.

When I did the EA82 tranny into my MY, I had a custom tailshaft made, could I just have put the L series shaft in? Are they the same wheel base?

there was about 5mm difference in some wheel base figures I found between MY and L wagon. There are some good photos somewhere showing 40mm flat bar extending from beneath front of the front seats from the floor to hold centre bearing in place to use L tailshaft.

has anyone put the interior of a L series in to a brumby?
an just the bit that sorrounds the gear stick an 4wd shifter? just wondering if that will work/look neater then me cutting the original plastic?

I don't see why not - so long as you're not using the touring wagon console as its all one piece that flows down from the dashboard to the rear of the seats...

You shouldn't need to cut anything.

Well i used the gear linkages from the L series. The L series 4wd selector doesnt line up where the brumbys did.

You don't need to cut anything in the cabin, period. If you extend the bracket as per the instructions it all looks stock-standard. The only internal difference on mine is a GLF-5 gearknob to show the 5th gear :)

If you get really stuck lmk and I'll send you some photos. It's only a short extension you need to weld (can't recall how long, it was a while ago). I had a quick look on USMB and can't see it referenced in their write-ups but I read it somewhere.

I have fitted the L Series D/R 5 speed into my 84 MV Brumby and used the L Series console from the back ashtray bit to the bit under the radio console this left a gap of about 10mm (that's 1 cm to your seamstresses out there)between the l Series console and the Brumby radio console bottom bit. I did not have to modify the gear linkages at all for either gear or mode selection just open up the floor hole a bit to suit. I retained the Brumby handbrake handle. Only if you look for it and compare do you miss the L series handbrake as completing the set.
