Bolt on turbos for 91 n/a ej22
Looking for some information about bolt on turbos for n/a ej22. Has anybody done one and what are your thoughts. Cheers Peter

Here is a few more words with a bit more fact than the thoughtless dribble of the last post.
It has been done and with some success in the US, with normal NA internals too, some EJ22T parts are needed but they are BOLT ON as the question asked.

EJ22 Dual range AWD lifted, widened and much happier now thanks very much.
1991 L Series wagon, white and perfectly normal apart from the ticking, no I think that is normal.
Jet boat..webbered EA81 with a hybrid tin dish welded and glued to it.

I think in the US they actually have EJ22turbos.
But yeah, it's not worth doing. It's much better to just put a turbo motor in. They are designed as a turbo motor by the people who know - Subaru. It's false economy to turbo a non-turbo motor when taking Subaru. It works out similar in cost or even more costly and is ultimately going to be inferior and less reliable.

Still never connected apart from running in the new motor - 89.2hp for a 1013cc is nothing to sneeze at. Back on topic though - I am looking into the same company doing a kit for me for the soob - reckon it willbe the same price too - maybe I just get a fleabay SC12/14 blower - $300 landed. Turbo would be good but reckon the install would be a nightmare.

Some years ago I saw ads for EJ22 turbo kits in US magazines.
Those bits bolt on. Fuji Heavy Industries factory Bolt on.

Well I would do that but I dont think Mr RTA would appreciate a 2 litre STI engine in a 600kg mini...would be a helluva lot of fun though!!!:-DAndrewT wrote:$5k jeebus!

Just on a side note - the supercharged 1275 minis will give a rex the fright of its life - but because of 10 inch wheels and horrible ratios(final 3.44:1)the rex will eat you upin the long run...worth it though when you are at the lights let me tell you - a smiling rex driver giving you the thumbs up when you get overtaken. The Starlet turbo conversion is very popular too - one fellow has a 1973 mini pulling nearly 250fwhp and is just insane to drive - not a lot but in a 600kg car it is madness - did wheelstands in reverse!

Yes there is EJ22T but they had different heads than N/A ones, I dont know why or what. But it was SOHC.

The USDM EJ22T is nothing like the Australian delivered EJ22 (I just don't mean the turbo bit)
The block is different, The liners & wall thickness are different, the heads are different, the pistons are different, the cam profile is different.
Lets just say the only thing they have in common is the displacement 2.2L........

Gee tells me that some of the mob in QLD turbocharge NA EJ22s but the engine would want to be in top condition ring and valve sealing wise .
NA engines have the advantage of a higher compression ratio and slightly better cam profiles .
The trick is to use a turbo thats a little less restrictive on the hot side because NA engines don't have the thermal "reserve" that productuion turbo ones do , things like thicker piston ring lands / oil squirters / oil coolers /intercoolers etc .
If you do it mildly it could be ok depending on your expectations , if you plan to cane it then obviously an RS motor would be better .
