Clutch replacement on EJ20T L series

Post by ToyRX » Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:05 am

I need to replace the clutch in my rally car before the next meet on the 30th so was planning to attack it this weekend.

I was planning to do this the same way i have done all subaru clutchs by removing the engine and working on it on the floor.
However this time I have a couple of differances....

This is my first attempt working on an EJ20T let alone one squeezed into a RX, it there anything in particular I need to watch out for?
Plan was.. drain/remove radiator and fans, unbolt PS pump and sit off to the side, drop off exhaust from turbo, remove TMIC to get at clutch cable and top bolts, unplug loom, fuel lines, acell cable etc, undo engine mounts and remove with chain hoist.

Am i missing anything here? :? altinator? Uppipe?

Also this is my first "pull" type clutch any tricks with changing the thrust bearing on these I should know about :?:

There is a plug on the hydraulic slave cylinder side of the gearbox where the clutch fork pivot is. You need something like a 10mm allen key to remove the plug.

Then use a long 10mm bolt and screw it in the pivot and slide it out.

Undo all the bellhousing bolts and you seperate the gearbox/motor and have enough gap to get a long flat screw driver in there the pry off the thrust bearing from the clutch pressure plate.

It will all make sense after doing it once.

Cheers spittin_teeth,

I dont need to worry about the hydraulic clutch stuff, the car runs the standard RX cable setup, just uses a custom bracket, talk about heavy though 8O
Good tip on the thrust bearing, I needed an excuse to buy one of those long screwdrivers anyway

the hydraulic clutch is nice and light. I am guessing you have driven a RS Turbo or similar? Such a big different in pedal feel.

Yeah - the old man has a 96 RSB which is fun to drive. Clutch has good feel to it.

The rally car is a WRX flywheel, and twin turbo pull type clutch (1200pd preasure plate) so it is VERY heavy on a cable clutch. Just the combo of a heavy plate and short throw distance.

The TT pressure plates are about 1760lbs. You can get them ugraded to
about 2400lbs. This stops a lot of slip under high loads. I would
recommend it for a rally car.
