off road racing??
off road racing??
so i'm interested into getting into something else.....
ideas??
i was thinking somthing more modern then the brumby of tennant creek racing (even though that car is amazing!!!) my idea was either a subaru forester or an outback/liberty wagon.
class would be (i think) 6, restricted 4wd maybe uprading to open in the future.
any thoughts guys??

I have always wanted to run a forester xt in production class.
When I briefly looked at it you could upgrade engine internals, gearbox internals and suspension.
Meaning you could use a dog box and lots of parts designed for rally (front centre and rear diffs) as long as you dont increase the capacity of the motor!
I am sure that a well built motor and dog box could eaisly beat anything in this class on a flat road. But I am not sure how well the forester suspension will hold up? But with some well made struts it should be ok!
I think that if you bought a xt repairable riteoff from the auctions (considering the modifications this would be a cheap way to start!) You could build a very competitive car for around 30-50k depending on how much work you put in yourslef, But I am sure this could easily blow out as racing can be like throwing money into a bottomless pit!
This has been a dream of myne for many years but I dont think it will ever happen unless I win the lotto!
Cheers Troy

yeah im sure i can find one down at subareck, maybe some sponsor ship or somthing as a stolen recovery or blown engine and just build it from there using the parts they have.
yeah it could blow out big time but meh, if it gets close to that well then find another sponsor or put it in the shed.

I just had a look at the cams manual and the things in the drivetrain that cannot be changes are the engine block manifold, gearbox case, flywheel (but material can be removed) and intercooler.
That allows you to build a very trick motor/gearbox the only limiting thing is the intercooler but maby you could add water spray to solve this?
As far as I can understand diffs are free so I would put in a STI r180 rear lsd and stronger driveshafts.
Suspension can be strengthened and mounts added for additional shocks but thats about it.
I think a 500hp forester could eaisly beat the v6 triton that won the finke (production class) this year!

but there would have been a lot of money in that v6 triton i can bet.
im thinking working on the suspension would be my main thing.
maybe some gbox mods but just a ej25 NA for reliablilty and the fact that fuel can be shite when out offroading if we need to haul some.

I've never been to the Baja Peninsular myself but I've read, heard and seen a lot of footage about it. Where in Australia have you seen conditions like that?
I've never done a Dakar either although friends of mine who have, told me there's nothing like it anywhere over here.
Certainly the Finke Desert Race is unique in it's terrain. Hundreds of kms of whoops and no chance of service within the 4 hour time limit.

dakar is a lot of sand with a few technical, boggy stages at the start. so the sand dunes aren't as long but perth has some (and ive only played there once), the boggy bits can be found nearly anywhere and the plains area of Dakar are on gabled(?) desert ie sturt desert, all rocks.
baja is mostly sand too (i think) but with a lot of man made jumps and the like. its very fast pretty much like the finke.
your right in saying that the finke is unique but you can always pull paralles from it

you are correct there brumbyrunner.
suspension is going to be hard under the production class rules, i can have to shockers and and coil springs, just for the fun of it im tempted to price up tien adjustable dampening rate for it =)
first time out of the build were looking at just two sets of standard shockers and springs on each wheel. im just checking the legality of this but as they are coil overs and im allowed two shockers the springs are in there original position. should be legal.
this will just be the test run and depending on our weak points we will be uprgading them as we go.
for tires im looking into a supplier of 30" OD with my lift and trim i can fit that easily.

What? Perth? What offroad racing is done on those dunes? Have you seen the dunes in the Atacama Desert?spike wrote:dakar is a lot of sand with a few technical, boggy stages at the start. so the sand dunes aren't as long but perth has some (and ive only played there once), the boggy bits can be found nearly anywhere and the plains area of Dakar are on gabled(?) desert ie sturt desert, all rocks.

Have you seen the fesh fesh? We have nothing like that in our championship.
What about the silt beds at Baja? And what man made jumps are you referring to?

Have you actually seen under a forester? This will never work.first time out of the build were looking at just two sets of standard shockers and springs on each wheel
I would recommend more research, and less time dreaming out loud on the internet.
