most modifications to the factory fuel system tend to make engine less efficient.

having said that a weber will give you a good alternative to the hitachi but in the long run won't be any more fuel efficient.

as well you can go to a 2 inch exhaust it will get the exhaust out of the pipe quicker and depending on what you put on the end may make it louder as well.

if you can get your hands on a hiclone, i reckon they make a difference. that said i wouldn't pay 160 bucks or whatever they are worth for one, i got given mine.

Given that there is not much you can MODIFY to improve economy but there is things you can DO. Off the top of my head (and anyone feel free to add or disagree) you can

1) Don't keep heavy items in your car needlessly
2) Keep tyre pressures up (unless on the beach ;) )
3) Keep the standard tyre sizes/track widths original.
4) Drive economically and responsibly.
etc..

5) Make sure you replace all items at service intervals.. and make sure HT leads are within specs.
6) Use higher octane fuels and have the car tuned to suit (more advancement on timing = more power) but this is a very dangerous if not done right or you use lower octane fuel if tuned for higher.

Drop the EA82 MPFI in there. Or drop the EJ22/EJ20 in and change your 5th gear ratio - this is what I've been thinking that I should have done when I did the conversion, stock L series 5th is too high for the EJ I reckon! Much better fuel economy can be had with a lower 5th like the factory liberty's ratio...

Doing the EA82 MPFI is almost as much work as the EJ. Been there and done that - wish I knew about the EJ conversion earlier!

Cheers

yeah id like to chuck an ej in there with the L 'box, but itll have to wait till my mini is done... would changing the 5th's ratio be that difficult to do?

5th gear is the easiest gear to change

hey mate. im heading down the ej22 path with my L i reckon, going to be cheaper and easier than the brumby at the moment. once that goes ahead ill sell you my weber carbie if you like. then get a decent exhaust, chuck my lift kit in it, get some nice 27's and she'll be sweet ;)

You'll love it! The L should have come out with an EJ under the bonnet from the factory

That's my opinion anyway!
