disk does make a huge difference but in saying that you sorta have to justify the cost... for instance if dropped a turbocharged 25 in there then yea your gunna need the disk but for a daily and weekend camper running stock engine is the cost of disk really worth it

You only need 1 "oh shit" moment to justify the cost.

Already sold my rear discs before anyone else asks.

I got a set super cheap from a wreckers who didn't know what it was.

The important part is the 4wd hub that the disc mounts to. I got a set for $30! I couldn't get the rest of the backing plates etc as we only had two tools with us that day - bloody murphy!
The 2wd backing plates will need the hole for the hub enlarged, other than that they'll bolt right up, as do the callipers from either the 2wd or 4wd. Buying things in little parts can sometimes be cheaper than buying the whole thing - not always though!

I must say that my rear discs were a HUGE improvement over the drums, I now doubt that they were ever working... And there's no need to put a bias valve in there either which makes this a super easy modification!

Cheers

steptoe wrote:You'd be surprised at the difference in a ute as light as the Brumby, Steve. I found once I fitted the 5 speed I didn't have as much vacuum assist in 5th gear - the disc rear sorted that, and as for quick stops I think the rears take a bit of load of the fronts, giving them more stopping power.
I accept that.

I fitted 3 sets of rear discs in my L/MY/MV days - not all my cars as such

L-Series: fitted only to pass engineering with the EA82T on board. On the strip, I could not honestly say I noticed a difference pulling when up from the 1/4. Around Mallala (sort of like Winton) brake fade was the least of my issues throwing lifted car about! Off road was improved though, esp when wet.

Brumby: mates car, we fitted them for something to do. They did make a difference when towing, but could not tell the difference unladen.

MY TW: some improvement, felt like fresh pads and fluid front and rear.

The Cordias of the era had rear drums, and were significantly faster than the RXs - but one should not benchmark against mediocracy I suppose.

For the $$$, in a std MV, I reckon there are better things one could spend money on. Like a fully-sic 3 inch chrome roll bar and matching bull bar

RX Rear brakes including new pads, $175 US + shipping:

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/sho ... p?t=124922

Probably run $150 for shipping these days (when I got mine it was $100 for the brakes, $100 for shipping, and $60 for pads locally).

$350 AUD landed or thereabouts is my guess...cheap for the improvement in braking.

I was watching those, they started off real cheap, then escalated.
Unfortuneatly it was the wrong time of year for the bank account :(
Good luck to you! I hope they work well!

Thats a very reasonable price, if I were to sell my brumby's rear discs (not happening ever by the way) it wouldn't be for less than that (maybe more even) and they would need to come and get them.

Mine cost $400 and I had to pick them up, they did bolt straight on without needing any repairs.

Do you need to do any work to them, or will they bolt on without rebuilding etc?

Tonga. They had already been fitted to a Brumby and come with lines n stuff.

No repairs need as such untill I inspectthem but I will skim the discs and depending on price of caliper rebuild kit I may rebuild them. I probably will as that is the kind of person I am.
They will get abrasive blasted and a fresh coat of paint. (cause I can).
