Brumby Front Driveshafts

Hi everyone

I'm new to this group so probably don't know all the protocols. Perhaps this question has been asked before, and answered.

I've just bought my first Subaru, a 1992 Brumby, Perth city driven with 128,000km. I've driven it home here to Geraldton and it ran well, even outrunning a Land Cruiser with boat in tow on the Indian Ocean Drive (as it turned out the Brumby was only running on 3 cylinders due to a tight tappet!). It needed some servicing and most of this has now been done.

The mechanic replaced the front CV joint boots and now the joints are noisy (they weren't before). His boss told me that once the joints are taken apart, cleaned and repacked, that this can happen as the parts may be reassembled in different position. He also told me that they may still last another 10 years, even if the constant clicking on turns and load may drive me nuts.

I'd prefer to replace them than take a risk that they may disintegrate under load (which happened to me with a VW years ago). I'm told it's cheaper to replace the entire shaft assemblies rather than recondition them.

I used to do this sort of work myself years ago (back in VW Club days) but now no longer have the tools, ramps etc. Can you tell me please:

The mechanic's boss says price of the shafts have come down in past few years and he would replace them with shortest labour time, considering the work already done. I've searched for driveshafts on the net, to find some on eBay (everythingauto2007) for $160 each plus $25 postage (made in China); and some from SunSpares Parts Plus for $200 per shaft, with freight approx $65 - $75 a pair (origin unknown but reliable as they fit them in their workshop). I can't find any original Subaru parts to compare. I have yet to ask the mechanic for his price.

What is your advice please? I'm starting to love this little red Grumbler and want to get it into best condition.

i used some cv's from china on an old subaru i had, i wouldn't do it again 6 months and i was up for a new one chucked in a second hand subaru one and perfect.. couldnt tell you which company produced them and i have no doubt you would get some good ones come out of china just my personal experience

Geday mate,i buy em for 100 bucks ea off the driveline specialist on ebay,wouldnt bother tryin to fix boots,if anything has gotton in the boot it will flog out anyway..i get 100.000k outa them no problem..all you need is a punch to get the pins outa to gear spline.a welding rod wrks also..200 and ya done..its too easy..b

Call Allens cvs in osborne park. They're quite cheap for good gsp branded shafts.

Bought mine from driveline specialist on ebay too, and cos im local they installed them too.

I got GSP driveshafts locally here in Mackay a few months ago for just under $200 each. So far so good. I fitted them myself so I'm not sure how much it would've cost.

Thank you all for your replies. Allen's gets good reviews. I need to balance driving down to Perth from Gero to get this work done. Maybe I do it myself in Gero - but after so many years not crawling around under cars, I do really respect those who do, and know their job.

I went to buy some of the $100 cv's that where on ebay the shop was based in Brisbane
I called in and spoke to him and i said that i was going to cross the simpson desert and wanted to get good ones for the trip
He said to me i won't sell you these because they won't last the trip

it says a lot for them he said he bought a hole container of them (from China)
He made me up some with bigger cups and shafts i think they where out of a 2wd car they where 2nd hand but rebuilt I got well over 18 months before i needed to change boots for the first time and i am still running them now about 3 years now

I bought a pair of "Brumby" driveshafts from Amazon for $15 each plus postage ~$40 in total (yes $15 each for last 2!). One has arrived but it's labelled for Justy 87-88 R. Now I've had a look at Justy's online and am not sure this will fit. Any ideas? I haven't crawled underneath the see. Well if they don't fit, I will have a nice set of Justy driveshafts for sale to anyone "lucky" enough to own one. These are labelled GCK Industrial USA Made in Taiwan.

i just got mine from super cheap, $105 each and they have done a few k's so far no dramas, but i dont think they will outlast a genuine shaft, think in the future, money permitting i may try find some decent quaitly one, it all comes down to you get what you pay foe, cheer, josh

The shafts are labelled SB-8014 (APW since 1972). They are coded GCK-SB-1-07-013 (outer male), GCK-SB-8-07-014 (axle), GCK-SB-3-07-516 (inner female) and bar-coded 6_54023-07014-6 (CS 038577102). Google searches inconclusive. One says Justy only, not Brumby/Brat; another says 2002-4 Impreza! Is there anyone close to Geraldton who may have a Brumby shaft to compare these with?

Another great source for parts is FROG here on the forum, he'll be able to give you quotes and doesn't expect to get a sale from you, but it is good when you can swing business his way I reckon!

Jutsy drive shafts probably won't fit - 99.9% sure on that one.
