Hi,
I have looked through the transmission forum and this one for info regarding the fitment of a 91 ej22 into a 99 liberty ty754 5 speed box. I'm just trying to find out what combination of clutch, flywheel and starter motor will work together in this combo. It's a push style shift fork with the slave cylinder on the bell housing area. I do have an ej22 flywheel here just unsurw of what to order from here.

So you are fitting an EJ22 into a Liberty? My first question is how are you going to run it from the Gen3 Liberty ECU?

The clutch and flywheel from the EJ22 should work with the later gearbox, but may have to alter the positions of the locating studs in the bellhousing because the early ones had 4 bolts, later ones had 8.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. Actually it's a vw beetle that is already running an ej22 engine with an adaptor plate onto the beetles gearbox. I am putting the liberty box into it using a subarugears reverse rotation kit. Lots of fun all round . Just trying to make sure i buy the right bits. Mike.

It's a very cool product. There is just not much info on clutch interchanges. Some have said use the flywheel and clutch to suit the gearbox others have said they can use either. Was just hoping someone had done a newer box into an older engine on here.

It should bolt straight up without an issue, just use the 4 bolts the EJ22 can use, forget the rest on the gearbox.

Have you looked into running early kombi rear axles with the drop gears? I believe these kombis run the gearbox backwards, the drop gears change the rotation back to the correct direction.

The early kombis had reduction boxes at the rear wheel end of the axle shafts, how ever the are a swing axle design and only have a pivot in the inner diff end of the shafts. Leads to crazy camber changes and pretty evil handling all round. Also the 5 inches of extra height would kill the look. The Subaru 5 speed is being used in many vw's now due to it's strength, ease of fitment and it's gearing is far better suited to the ej engine than the old vw 4 speed box. Thanks for the tips guys, it's great knowing I'm on the right track clutch wise.
