L 5 Speed behind EA81 200mm clutch :(

Maybe some pics later, but as i started to suspect, the Holden Isuzu Gemini friction plate mixed with Subes 4WD 200mm pressure plate and the 5 speed clutch fork and throwout bearing combo has its drawbacks when converting an MY EA81 from its four speed 4WD to an L 5 speed 4WD.

All has to do with where the clutch throw out bearing levers against the clutch pressure plate fingers and how much adjustment and pedal throw you get.

I also retaINED THE caps lock off MY clutch pedal ...

The difference between the pressure plates is the size of the hole that is between the finger tips, an L bearing pushes further along, almost to a first knuckle if they were real fingers, rather than right at the tip.

About to resolve all the non issues that I have had in 9 years 150,000km with the 5 speed in it. Should just be a more refined shifter, cable adjust when the EA82M is in and running.

Why not just have your flywheel machined down to a 20.7mm step and fit the EA82 clutch pressure plate then call it a day?

That setup has been tried and tested many times with good results - saves stuffing around with a mixed bags of parts.

At the time of conversion the clutch was fairly new, the machining down of a flywheel was not mentioned in any posts back in 2005 and might just go down that path soon if things not work out with this EA82 fitment :(

When you say L.Series, are you referring to 2WD or 4WD model 5 speed gearbox? From memory only the EA82 2WD 5 Speeds had the 200mm clutch. All 4WD used the 225mm setup.

I would only use the 225mm kit if you're planning to do any towing or 4WDing.

The EA81 came with both 200mm and 225mm clutches depending on their year of manufacture.

L 5MT DR 3.7:1 diff ratio. Tell you what, for this clutch has been in use for 240,000km , with the Gemini friction plate having done about 180,000 of that - everything is in pretty good condition.Friction plate lining looks almost new, just some cracks look like apearing in the centre spindle plate section with the damper springs. May have been a bad thing one day soon....

The EA82T 2WD 5 speed with 25 spline stubs used the 4WD 225mm clutch and flywheel, non turbos got the 200mm FWD clutch, which still different to EA81 clutches - different flywheel step and size of ;hole' between clutch spring finger tips
