the Mongrel is alive !! :D

Post by steptoe » Mon Jan 27, 2014 12:53 pm

Well, after all my little dramas of no clutch , blah, blah, blah :oops:

the Mongrel is alive and running, got water in her, got idle, got timing on 10 DBTDC for a while to see how things go, and the lifters have quietened down to silent. Man, no tappets to adjust ...never did themm in last 140,000km of the 510,000km EA81 that came out,
Just got her up to temp and shut down to leave it to heat soak - see if any coolant leaks need attention.

edit .....Bummer, found a pool on workshop floor, and in the carpark at the shops...coming from under the inlet manifold - either welch plugs on manifold or a hole in the metal pipe off the water pump .... :( At least the dirty water in it should leave a little tell tale trail to follow . Time to source some 10 & 12mm welch plugs in case thems the trouble.

Also need to wire up the oil and temp senders as the wiring stays with the EA81 - I think ??
Air ducting is next to be sorted...EGR hook-up and dizzy vac advance to be sorted from a ported vacuum source just above the throttle blade

I started piecing this EA82M together some four years ago, doing bit by bit, forgetting some things were loose, where some other things were.

Another delay was hoping to see the EA81 hit 500,000km :)

So, what's in it ??

* 1987 EA82 carb block 188,000km when I pulled her out after good test drive
* EA82T heads - just because that is what I had in serviced condition, and was intended to be turbo but tambox suggests not good at NA comp ratios
* Oil feed blocked off, oil drain plugged up too
* EA82T cams - a profile thought to be good for LPG .
* Mizpah Enginering reco HVLA's
* not genuine HG's, fitted before I knew better :(
* EA82 mpfi inlet manifold to match the mpfi twin port heads, blocked off injector holes.
* EA82 Y pipe already in
* still using std acc cable, just a curstom bracket
* oh, important thing is L series clutch pedal with pedal box mods because I also have 5MTDR from an L Series in it
* new Excedy clutch came out of a wreck turbo FWD Vortex, flywheel too !
* new genuine sump gasket
* gees, I did new seals surely ??
* Valvoline 15W40

Got her idling about 750-800rpm , the idle adjust screw nice addition being an mpfi throttle body , no stuffing with lock nuts on the throttle stop !

Found timing at 20 DBTDC with vac advance, 14 DBTDC without vac advance.

Runs really smooth and quiet compared to the old EA81, it doesn't sound as quick, feels about the same.

Taken it out , with water on board , just in case. Not leaked since !

Comparing to the EA81TC, shifting way short of suggested 4 speed shift points on the speedo, 1shifting into second by about 20kph, into 3rd by40 ....never again am I gonna see a true 80kph in second in this baby. In fifth at 80 kph on the highway, almost did nothing when asked to hit the hundred, but gees, when I squeezed it just over 100 she wanted to giddy up so could be a nice overtaker in top at highway speeds. Need a 110 or more limit and not on double demerit time either, to test her out on an overtake.

And bloody hell it is quiet ! I can hear the rumble of the bearings in the rear wheel more, and gearbox bearing noise, birds tweeting, window rattling

The rattle of what I thought was inside the cat has gone - silent, no rattle at all - that's shifted to the rear muffler banging on the tow bar :p

This project reunites the cat and engine from my Touring Wagon and the cat did not rattle back then. Dunno why it did under the EA81 .....

12mm and 16mm welch plugs just in case for the manifold region water leak that seems to have stopped.

All this makes me wonder how an EJ20 or 22 would go in this :p

Was the EA81 causing you troubles? and what's a EA81TC?

TC like Triumph 2500 TC , twin carbs :)

The EA82M sitting on the floor all these years and never knowing how it would go was a monkey. The EA81 had an oil leak seal or pump, the clutch had been in it forever,needed tappet adjustment...so at least I got a fresher engine, new clutch, no noise tappets and was dead on 10k for an oil change

Wondering about an EJ22, well the only way to find out is do it.
You will be impressed, then LPG it to be more impressed.
You could adapt a constant 4wd box as well to make a stunning car that you will be happy with for years.
Then do your others.
L serious, still.

Why not LPG if you can, you gotta remember straight gas cars are a lot better than the old troublesome dual fuel conversionds of the 90s. They are very good on fuel, but think of cutting that roughly in half again.
Good job on finishing off your project engine too, you must be satisfied to finally get it in and running.

Cheers Jake
