MY EA81 turbo x mem dimple pic

A different approach to making a non turbo engine cross member into a turbo cross member. Instead of the verbal instructions or text to make a scallop cut and invert that scallop, weld back in, or cut to suit a pipe, weld pipe in type methods.

Putting this method out just not in a pictorial step by step

I looked at it, made a cut across the bend, and then down the entire section, so, roughly a round circle marked out, roughly cut to quarter it and applied careful, precise whacks with a mid size bfh to get desired shape.
I had no removing metal steps, just reshaping of the flaps that remained after cuts, bits overlapping each other

Took above described mess to a welder who did it in no time flat with a big momma MIG unit welded top and underside overlaps, and filled the voids that appeared due to reshaping. Fifgured the fewer cuts, the stronger this modification would be. Though, also have MKI cross member being trialled, welded by moir and looks to be holding up over 150,000km or more :) just no ID marks to satisfy engineers

He also stamped the job right near the welds with his issued boiler maker id number. With that, I sanded his ID numbers to bare metal, covered with a piece of electrical tape before spraying with shiny epoxy paint. If a certifier needs to inspect numbers, tape can be peeled. Just noticed numbers are now visible top side of the tape after paint applied and set :) If need be, I can also get the welding wire reel number to further ID what material went into it.

There's always more than one way to skin a cat then :)

Looks like an easy enough mod, seems like alot of red tape you need to go through with certified welding (and certified welding wire?!?) But I guess at least you've covered your ass. Not much of a scollop required either, is it quite a small up pipe?

Bring on the EA82T Brum then :)
Will it ever end!?

Good work Steptoe. Was the qualified welder expensive?

Cheers

Up pipe is standard EA82T, with some massaging on the bulky heat shield.

Expensive ? For 5 minutes work for an $800 a day guy? Nah, I had some credit up my sleeve with my LPG skills and his sick fork lift :) It also helps if welders stay clear of tuning forks in the first place - #1 pot is not at the front of the fork :p

More welds in that than in the Titanic.. should be safe around icebergs
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

The irony is that the titanic had hot rivets, not welds...

So Jonno could still be in some trouble around icebergs
