Awesome. Thanks for the update! I’m liking those stainless steel trim end pieces - I need these!

Now to hunt down someone local to me who had a 3D printer.

Yesterday I saw a presentation be Mat Bowtell from free3Dhands. Awesome work he does and he’s a great speaker with a very unique story to share. If you ever get a chance to see him speak, get on it!

Cheers

Looks good mate!

What’s the first project and is it difficult to use?

I wouldn’t mind one but I don’t have a suitable space for it with curious kids and their little fingers.

Cheers

Yes they are a bit fiddly to set up and get good print from.

First go at printing something :

Got to find a spot / make a booth for it to work more effective / safe for operator ( fumes need to be extracted ) ... :p

Pic above didn’t work for me. That’s a massive bit of code for the image address!

What’s the difference in link/address for the pic in the first post to the one in your second post above? Maybe that will shed some light on the reason why some pics show and others don’t.

Cheers

Sweet work mate! Will you manage to get that funky little pattern into the print like the original units? I know that’s a big ask!

Keep up the good work!

Leather Look ...

Post by Bantum » Mon May 03, 2021 1:21 am

Yep the fake leather look, there's been a hold up on that as I haven't worked out how to do it yet.
I had thoughts of using an imprint stamp ( heat up & brand basically ) but open to suggestions ...
Only other way I know of is to make a mold to inject / cast into ... :/

Not sure about anyone else but to me even a smooth surface would be better than no surrounds at all ;) You can add surface finishing to bring out a relief/pattern after the print.

Did a bit research & found this :

Will have to give it a go ...

Add: Managed to add some 'texture' to the surface :

Still need to work out how to convert it into actual 3D file that can be printed ...

Why are there captive screw three sections? That’s what I based my thoughts on!

Looks good, or is that the sample unit you based the design from?

Yes, made a direct copy of the original :

Idea is to strip the metal parts & reuse them on the printed base where the old is past muster ... :/ ( broken or deteriorated )

You can download the file here : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1478397

Nice work Bantum, 3D printing has done so much good for the issue of old, brittle, non-existent (new) odd little plastic parts for cars and restorations.

I'm wondering, would you offer your 3D printing services for outside jobs?
The rear windscreen demister in my wagon doesn't work, I think the element is cactus. I've got an idea for a PTC heating element and a little blower fan mounted in the tailgate but would need some custom ducting/joiners to pipe the warm air to the base of the window. I'll do the design work, but I don't have a 3D printer, could I send the files your way?

Re: Printer Service ...

Post by Bantum » Tue Jun 01, 2021 3:58 pm

Yes had thoughts of doing something like that ( am in the process of build a 3D printer ) but not looking to go into business as there are too many regulation / tax implications for me, so it will be just a 'hobby' thing done in my spare time for now ... :/

Speaking of updates, just got this to put the printer in ... :)
