hey Fellas, I have an old 84 sube wagon. When I go campin i usually Load it up to the max. On some hills 3rd gear is to much and 4th just makes it die. Since then I have cut the Air cleaner box out, front and back. This seamed to give to better pick up, and now it pulls up large hills.

Is there anything eles that i can do that dosnt cost big $$$ ???

Fitting a 5 speed gearbox from an L series makes a big difference, it gives you a gear between your current 3rd and 4th, best thing I ever did to my suby.

I agree with Jordan. An L Series 5 speed 4WD d/r conversion. All the bits cost me $500 and 20 hours off stuffing around. The ratios of gears and diffs a bit of a lucky dip. Try different dia rims and tyres to see if you like the change. Then there is the cortina / escort weber carby ($50 or so) plus redline brand adaptor and a tune. Open up the spark plug gaps to 1.0 or 1.2mm. 98 Octane must be the easiest and cheapest upgrade. Clean air filters help.

Cheers fellas, I have a 5speed d/r box in the shed. We pulled it outta a trashed L series out in the forrest. Allso I have a set af 14" sunnies. I may put them on when my current terries ware out. Does this mean if I swap my 13" - 14" will i have 2 adjust me Speedo?

Jordan, are you sure the 5spd will fit in my sube? I hate take everythinhg out and then see it dosnt fit. Will I need a longer output shaft? I will be great if I cant shove it in, we have all the tools and all the time. Might even put it in next weekend if everything goes 2 plan

I fitted mine in April this year and stil have some memories of it. Wait for old tech manuals to be resurrected and it is all there in detail.

The L series d/r 5 speed fits in std height MY and Brumby

Use MY gearbox crossmember and its mounts that you adapt the holes to suit L series box. At the top rear of box where shift levers bolt on the is a threaded boss (useless lump that is best removed before install otherwise bang, bang. Make sure your rear diff ratio is the same as the front.

There is flywheel clutch set up to consider and tailshaft also.


I kept std EA81 8 inch clutch flywheel but used a petrol Gemini 1.6l rwd friction plate (40 to 60) . It is 8 inch to suit flywheel and pressure plate and has splines to match five speed.

Best cheapest to use L series wagon tailshaft two piece and make your own mounts to floor
