FWD Rear Disc Brakes to fit MY/L...?

Post by L-Raiser » Wed Aug 08, 2007 11:03 am

Does anyone know if Vortex Front Wheel Drive REAR DISC BRAKES can be modified to fit an MY or L.....?????

Because I have a set out of a Vortex FWD that a guy on the other side of OZ wants to buy off me to fit to his Brumby.... He and I are of the belief that they can be fairly easilly modded to suit 4WD application, by creating a hole in the hub for the rear drive shafts to fit through.

Has anyone done this mod...??? or know of anyone who has...?

Coz before I prep and ship these I want to make sure this guy can use them.

I have no idea if this would work.....surely somebody has tried it....

Try taking the brakes and backing plate off the 2wd hub and put them onto a drum brake 4x4 rear end (in place of the drum brakes).

hm on second thought this most likely will not work, there won't be any splines on the 2wd hub to match up to the 4x4 axel...

They will fit a 2wd MY or L, but not a 4wd so no good for a Brumby.

....Well....I figured that the side that counted was in fact the BACK of the brake to show what could or could not be done 'driveshaft-wise'....

Here is a pic of the front for ya.... :)

lol took ya tme
unfortunantly for u mine are on the car so i cant be bothered pulling a wheel off to take a photo but ill tkae one with it on if ur interested

im guessing theres no splines under that hubcap as the bearings cant run to well on splines

Chris is correct,

Not a chance this can work. The discs fit, the calipers fit, the backing plate fits. It is the hub that is different, the 2wd rear hub is just a bearing carrier, like on the front of a commondore. The 4wd rears are a splined hub, just like the front of an L series, only a different spline pattern.

Please watch before posting!

As I mentioned in my previous post, they are not the same - there are no splines, there is a stub axel on the swing arm.
It is a different size, there is really no comparison from a driven hub (ie rear 4wd hub) , to a free wheeling hub . even the backing plates slightly are different.

Close but no cigar...

backing plates cant eb hard to modify or even amke new ones
all some1 wuld need wuld be a new pair of discs then with the splined centre

thats to say the calipers are interchangable with both

Nah, the 4x4 discs don't have the spline in them, they bolt to the 4x4 hub which is what has the splines in it.
Otherwise it would be as simple as calling up your local DBA reseller and getting new discs.
Theres no way to do it without remanufacturing the whole thing really.

I could be getting mixed up with Lib stuff.
Okay....I'm intrigued propperly now - lets figure it out once and for all. I'm gonna go over to where my RX is and bust out some photos in the next couple of hours and post them up. Hold me to it!

If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

It is also why they are as rare as rocking horse ****... and expensive to buy second hand.
I have a set of 2wd rears sitting here, all rusted up now... they were listed for sale here years ago.

I should get around to tossng them...

dreaming I think,
Splines are in the hub, not the disc.
