Well my turbo decided to stop spinning 3 days ago.

So i was obliged to upgrade it.

Most of these pics have already been posted, but i though i would tell the story from the begining

I started with making a new up-pipe to omit the restrictive stock piece.

From this - 1 & 1/2 inch
Image

To this - 2 inch

Image

My dump pipe in construction - 2 & 1/4 inch

Comparison between the old VF4 and the GT Forester TF035
Image

The TF035 and WAIC in place I just need some pipes to connect them

And the radiator for the WAIC

Still have to get a few bits and pieces to mount the turbo and the WAIC

Sure it's a good idea bolting the WAIC to the body via that bracket? The factory fitment in an RS Turbo is to have the brackets bolted down off the motor so the WAIC can move with the motor - after all, it is part of the motor. This probably prevents possible fracturing of the reasonably fragile plastic pipes.
I guess it would be okay if theres heaps of flex...

Your probably right, although i have mounted it on rubber gromits, but if it does break, i can always make another one that mounts off the engine/gearbox.

This way was much easier

Hi Suparoo , a very interesting series of pics .

Would I be right in thinking that the TFO35 is the Forrester ball bearing turbo and that their output from the low end torque please EJ20T was around 140-150 Kw ?

If so thats similar to my longer term turbo plan and yes we're going to do something with that hopeless L header .
The thing I keep wondering about is the relocation of the stud or bolt hole on the later type turbos mounting flange . I'm curious to know if is feasable to "move" the hole on the turbos mounting flange so that either could bolt up easily . Can you tell me if doing it this way would make anything not fit ?

Cheers A .

Good point - I did consider this when doing mine, but in the end (and for ease) I mounted my WAIC on a bracket using the spare wheel carrier thread, then with a couple of elbows and 3inch IC hose.

Blew an elbow off a couple of times - I think once probably due to engine flex the other because the hose clamps were loose. Makes a horrible sound, leaving you feeling very nervous as the tide comes in.

Also depends on your lift (was 50mm) higher lifts using my set up would = more give.

Good luck - a worthy upgrade esp in summer

I didnt know the TF035 was ball bearing, but if it is.... YIPPEE!

I bought a pair of flanges off ebay that suit the TD04/TF035 turbos (i think they suit a hole heap of VF subaru turbos as well)

My new mounting flange sits almost where the old one was. Its just 3mm out from meeting up with the triangle shaped bracket off the VF4 flange that mounts to the engine

Suparoo, Nice to see that turbo is working out, should be something to look forward to when its up and running!
I didnt think the TD035 was ball bearing either?

I ordered a couple of silicone joiners today and got my mandrel bend for the downpipe.

And i also need some heat and oil resistant hose for the turbo oil outlet. Drove all over Coffs Harbour today and couldnt find any.

The other thing i need a short 90deg elbow in 2.25" to fit the turbo inlet and connect to my MAF pipe

if u have no luck ill get u some from here and send it over :)

hope it works out real nice for ya. Subafurys TD04 is a pretty sweet upgrade so hopefully this is to.

TF035 Mitsi turbo is the one fitted to the first GT forester that ran 125kw, they are not ball bearing but IMO is going to be smack perfect for an EA82T

Yes I'll be very interested to see how it goes .

I may have lined up that dead Forrester BB turbo so when it turns up and I can confirm its housings are not chopped up (wheels can hit housings if the turbos had a big lose) I can chase up my turbo supplier for a new cartridge (centre section plus wheels AKA CHRA) .

Can anyone tell me what the earlier Forresters were power rated at with the BB turbo ? I think it was a bit less than WRX's ie 147-153 Kw ?

Cheers A .

Thats what im hoping for, i know a few have done a TD04 swap, and the boost threshold is a few hundred RPM higher than the VF4/7. But the TF035 had a smaller exhaust housing, so should have really good response.

I thought only a few of the larger VF's had ball bearings

What are u using to pump the coolant for the WAIC?

It was kinda windy and my weld along the top is a bit spatter'ry, i also think i didnt have enough wire speed.

Just gotta join it to the cat now

passenger side guard is the way to do, make sure it is lower than the highest point in the system as well... just a silly side note..

Ok almost finished

Image

Just need one piece of 5/8" oil hose and a piece of 2.5" SS pipe to join the 2 pieces of silicone hose.

Oh and find out what i have to do with the PCV system and weld the exhaust back together
