Hi All - To all the tech heads out there, can anyone tell me what sort of horsepower I can expect from my EA82 in fairly stock form, and what the benefit would be if I stuck in an EJ18? Has anyone in NSW put an EJ20 into their L Series and then had it passed for rego?

Yeah Ben has done an EJ20 NA into his L series wagon. The EJ18 or EJ20 is a good re powering of an L series and i think the Ej18 is rated at around 72kw

newer more re-fined motor, efi, etc, wil always be a shitload better than the standard carby.

I think subaMike use to run a EJ18 in his old MY, and from what i heard it went like a shower of shit both on and off-road.

If you're going to do an EJ18 you might as well do the EJ20, I believe it's all the same, and no hassles with rego either.

Mikes EJ18 powered MY certainly was an eye opener on how much better it was then the EA81

EJ18 would be ideal to avoid problems at the rego inspection because it's the same capacity.
They don't have a dyno there so wouldn't know how much extra HP its putting out anyway

In NSW you are allowed a 15% increase in engine capacity as an owner certified mod, so there are no problems going from a 1.8 to a 2.0

I would still check with the NSW RTA because I think I remember the formula changing from the 15% in capacity to a difference in output . The reason being that they may not mind you going from EA71 to EA81 but EA81 to Honda S2000 could upset them . Capacity is not a reasonable reflection on output anymore .

They don't care what the output is, it is only the capacity, you may put a Honda S2000 motor into a car that was an EA81/82 if your heart so desires. As long as the emissions are same or better and all the anti-pollution gear is retained and no major structural changes take place it is an "Owner Certified Modification" as Peejay says.

Would the MPFI wiring and computer beable to run an EJ18 or EJ20 without any troubles? I'm guessing the sensors would need to be changed on the engine to those from the MPFI wiring harness?

Ideas/suggestions/knowhow?

Totally different, it's far easier to just graft the EJ loom+computer into the existing wiring. From memory there are only about 8 wires or so that need to be joined.

EA82 carby has about 84hp @ 5200
EA82 mpfi has about 97hp @ 5200
EA82T has about 111hp @ 5200

The Ej18 has about 110 hp (82 kW) @ 5600 rpm.

I had done a little research on the EA engines but i found it hard to find the power curves of the ejs mainly because they were used in so many of the new model subs and they all had diffrent powers to suit the car... i managed to find a little though.
The Ej20 rangers between 183kw to 210kw (280hp) but thats most of the turbo charged engines out of liberties. Im not sure on the basic engines
The Ej22 has about 100kw (130hp) for the basic engine unsure on the turbo but i think they have around 200kw but im not entirely sure.

N/A motors

early ej20 92kw
middle ej20 102kw
late(current) 112 or 114kw...

Not sure of year change overs...

Thanks to all of you for your input!!! Looks like I'll be putting an EJ20 Non turbo in my L Series Touring Wagon (EA82NA) - I can't wait to drive it!
I'll source a decent Front Cut and take it from there...

Anybody done the conversion/got it inspected in South Australia?

I can tell you my Ej20 quad cam NA motor with a pod filter & a custome set of 50mm headers made 120hp at the wheels ( two )

Looks like an EJ18 would be the only option in South Australia?
