Scratch this idea. I am just going to clean up the tray first and see where I go from there. Seems like the general consensus is that I should build myself a hard tonneau so I'll keep you guys posted.

Spaces will let water in from below ie road spray from tyres and help more stuff rust.

Also be v careful with grinder as fuel tanks directly below the tray.

why? thats a shitload of work and you will end up with less strength than you have now.

yourtray looks to be in blody good nick, why dont you just paint it with a tray lining paint?

I dunno I just thought it would look good, i like having a ute that stands out. Was going over some stuff just then though and am actually thinking against it.

Ill see if I can fix the tray up and failing that I may come back to this idea. I'll get a grinder on the weekend instead and start cleaning off the surface rust/ priming it.
Also cam, chequer plate costs way too much even though I can get it slightly cheaper from work. Will be making some new chequer plate panels for the bumper soon though I'll post pics when they are done.

Your tray looks good, better than what I've seen in Brumbys around.. most of them are rusted right thru....

IF in worst case - I would use Alloy (not steel) checker plate on it, its light and easy to bolt on - I would do that.

Yeah I was looking at making a chequer plate tonneau like Vidlers.... I think. Then I had an idea to make one out of marine ply. But I get a lot of ideas. Then after awhile I see the flaws. I could fibreglass myself one if I had the money. I'll just have to sand it and paint it cus I can do it myself.

I think you would loose a lot of structural integrity, the humps are there to make it rigid. Also, they stopped making cars out of wood some time in the 1930s I think

Just a quick thought for you paint the bottom of the tray with sound deadener or some other kind of rust proofer then lay your new tray over the top keeping the strength as well as getting the look you want

I think the first person to start a "run" of hard covers for the brumby would probably sell a few....

I'd buy at least one.

Making one out of fibreglass wouldn't be too hard actually. Just the cost of all the resin/ materials would add up but buying a new one if they existed would cost more. If I ever did make one I would want to check out how the brumby canopy sits on the tray cus it has to be based off that.

If I'm ever rich I'll make one and post up the plans here.

I wouldn't, unless I somehow get a sudden influx of money, which I doubt.

Was there ever a hard tonneau for the brumby? or even the American brats? I've got an idea for mine, just would like to add to it with other examples. Mine will end up being an aluminium frame with fibreglass on it. Barring that it will be marine ply. Only thing i can't figure out is the best way to transition from the main part to just before the window.

i havent seen a hard tonneau cover , but i have a moulded plastic liner that fits custom right up to the edge/window.It came with the brumby when i bought it.It has a company name on it. Ill check it out and see if they could help?

Yeah i got some pics of it saved on my comp somewhere. His is below the lip of the tray, i was thinking of having mine sit on the lip, with waterproof foam in between for a decent seal.
