get a sports exhaust or a cat?
hey pepz i cant decide on wat i should get. Which one is better give some advantages and disadvantages so i can make a decision. thanks guys
A cat is only one part of the equation really. A custom made exhaust system (from heads back) that's port matched is yer best bet, but it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to achieve.
Of course you have to match it up with an appropriate port matched intake system that flows well, including the right filter. Once again, depends on what you want to achieve and how much you want to spend. Do you want it to be legal? Are you after a "sound" or an increase in performance?

the question doesn't make sense. A "cat" is a catalytic converter which is part of an exhaust system anyway - any exhaust system, including sports ones.
If you get a sports exhaust system you must get a catalytic converter as part of it. Not having one is illegal and damaging to the environment and it is a myth that there are significant benefits to not having one. Obviously not having one reduces restriction in the exhaiust however the reduction is so slight it would barely be noticeable.
This is what I've heard from exhaust shops and performance workshops anyway.

i like dogs better.
But yeah, if you want a nice note, go a 2.25inch "cat-back" system. Meaning they replace everything from the headers back. Then get a hi-flow strait thru sports muffler, you'll probably want afew resonators "hotdogs" in the middle otherwise itll be too loud. Should cost about $300-350 for a mild steel item.
Otherwise if youre keen on trying to get performance upgrades get the headers re-done to a tuned variety, i don't see the point tho, dont expect much of a performance increase.
Once you get it done, you may think the cars faster, but itll be very minor, listening to the note makes you think youre going quicker. Your fuel economy might get slightly better too.
oh yeah, the ej22's do sound friggin awesome with the correct system! DOOOO ITT!!!

A "Cat-Back" system goes form the Catalytic Converter Backwards alex. hence CAT-Back.
removing the cat in an Ej22 will have NO EFFECT.
a Sports exhaust can have many meanings, i take it as being a catback system with straight-thru muffler and 1 or 2 Resonators.
