Sammy, $300 freight, far out. How come it costs $1000 to get a car from Japan but your headers cost that much?? What differences apart from the sound did you notice? Did you get it dynoed at all?

That is the only way techworks agreed to ship them, insured using UPS!
Not yet as the thing wouldn't run with the standard ecu so I've been, slowly, sorting that out (see other thread.)

if anybody is still thinking of fabrocating their own ive herd if u stick to the max sizes of your outlet and turbo inlet you should get the best out of it

use the same size pipe as the outlets on the heads and merge them into a single pipe the same size as the turbo inlet using mandrel bends
its no use putting a 3" pipe there if the turbo only has a 2" hole for the air to flow through

makes sence.... if itis larger would this not help the scavenging effect?

It might help with getting more of the gas out of the engine, but you're trying to keep the gas speed up.
Higher gas speed means faster turbo boost.

The larger the pipe diameter, the greater the cross-sectional area(A), and therefore the lower the speed(v) because the flow rate(Q) is the same.
Its a pretty standard hydraulics formula: Q = v * A
Crap, I just used something I learnt at uni
But you can get to a point where you'd be strangling the engine, which would lower the flow rate.

I like the idea of picking the ports sizes & making the pipes out of that. Work out the cross-sectional area of each individual port, add them together to work out the area required for the up pipe. If this is then bigger than the inlet size of the turbo, I'd then put a smooth taper down to that size. This will reduce any losses with lowering the area, but should help with increasing the gas speed to help the turbo spool up.

You can tell I've never thought about this, eh? Aiming to do something with a 4-1 and pipe sizes with my EJ when funds allow.

turbo works on expansion of gas so more room might allow it to expand faster and spin better ?

might be variation of hydraulics formula but shouldn't that formula be kept for liquids not compressable stuff like air and gas ?

Yeah, the hydraulics formula is a very simplified version.
I could get my brother who has a PHD & is currently being paid by Rolls Royce to work on jet engine theory at Cambridge uni to give a 3000 page citation if you want. LOL
But as a gas expands, the molecules don't jostle each other as hard as they have more room to move.
The scavenging theory is based on a gas rapidly expanding & then creates a vacuum to suck what's behind it, it won't push what's in front.

The pipe I am getting made up is exhaust port & turbo matched. The idea is to retain the Factory ECU but deliver more power.....

Yes it will. Better than factory ECU with the new pipe, due to the tuning ability of the after market system.

I can get the pipes made to suit a larger turbo than the VF2/4.

The idea was to make a pipe which will fit & work with factory ECU systems /settings, But still allow those of us who have aftermarket ECU's to extract more power.

I've got an ea81t which I think has the same ports as the ea82t. It's got the ea82t turbo on it as well. So I *think* these will suit me. I've been looking for a decent aftermarket headers solution for a while. I'll almost definately be up for a set!

Timmo - Yes the VF2 & VF4 were the factory delivered turbo’s

Stinky - Yes it is, Dave Martin from the Subaru 4wd club is after a set too.

I have made a different choice of engine (EJ20T) to fit to my new project car, I am still going to develop the pipe it just will take a bit more time...

Looks like I am a late starter on this thread – sorry I fell of a while ago however from what I can gather from the last page is it correct that someone (specifically Mr XtremeRX) is fab’ing up some of these pipes? I need to find out a price as I would be interested. I will attempt to back read the 7 or so pages however feel free to PM or e-mail me some info as well

Thanks
