Beating out the cat

Apart from being illegal and bad for fluffy animals and the polar ice caps, can anyone tell when what are the downsides of beating out a cat?

How is it done? Does it make a distinctive "i'm a povo and defect my car" kinda noise?

Cheers

Andy

First question.... WHY?

A properly functioning cat causes very little restriction and if you are having trouble, replace it. Ive heard its like a $6000 fine if you are caught without one.

I had to gut my cat temporarily a few years ago cos i had a severely flooding carb that cooked the cat. Car was definately louder, raspier and popped (backfired) a lot more.

I replaced mine asap cos it was like someone was behind my car with a stockwhip everytime i de-accelerated

More of a speculator question

Horrible rattling noise coming from around the Cat area, in conjunction with a reasonable flat spot in the 1500-3000 rev range. Might be timing and a coincidence, but just can't help thinking its the cat.

Would replace it but $$$'s i spose. Could go to a wreckers and pick one up that is just as crap as mine.

Not definitely going to do it, just wanted some info before i made any decisions

Well it aint your cat.

If your cat is blocked, you will loose power as your revs increase up to a point were it wont rev any higher

The rattling could just be a loose heatshield

Alright cheers. Will have another scoot around. May be the heatshield, or something loose.

Don't bash the cat out in the garage, or next time you start the car the garage will get filled with fluffy crud.

i had the insides of the cat removed in another car of mine (ford BA, stuffed coz of backfire, dual fuel problem)... it didn't sound good at all, had to replace the cat when i sold it coz of the roadworthy. I have a loud rattle under my L series and i'm thinking it's the resonator if it's not the cat.
