TD04 / VF2 base flange difference...
TD04 / VF2 base flange difference...
Hey guys, I thought I read somewhere that the two family's of turbos almost shared the same flange stud pattern, except for one bolt that was in a different spot. Can someone please enlighten me, with some measurements?
I am getting a new flange done and want it to suit both for a future EJ turbo upgrade.
thanks.

Nev is one step ahead of you Jono, im in the process of getting the measurements for him, im just gonna dig out the 2 spare turbos i have and copy their flanges onto paper and scan em
Here are some photos showing the differences between EJ style turbos, this includes the MHI TF035, TD04 and TD05 and almost all the IHI VF series and the EA style VF2 VF4 and VF7 turbos
This is both flanges side by side, TF035 on left, VF4 on right

This is the EA82 up-pipe on the VF4

..that's very cool Gannon! are they recent photos, or stock ones?
If you are able to still bolt an ea pipe to the TF035, is it possible to scribe the outline of the hole, put a straight-edge through the centers and measure the distance between the center of the hole in the pipe to the hole in the turbo? (by the looks of the picture, the 3 hole are in line)
If they aren't in a straight line, would you mind tracing the two and scanning them as you mentioned in the forum?
Kind regards, Neville.

I traced and scanned the bases of the turbos.
If you save the attachment and print it out, should be to scale on A4 paper.
I can take measurements if you need them

This might help

You can see that the dimensions between the top and right holes (green line) are 1.3mm different. All it takes is about 2 minutes with a round file and it fits fine.
This is what i used for my conversion Turbo Flange SUBARU WRX Up Pipe
Oh and i took them this arvo

When are you next visiting your dad? .I could leave both turbos and my up-pipe there for you to pick up if you want them. Or Tom and I could drop them off if we head up your way. The TF035 i bought off ebay and as a spare and never used it. The VF4 made a squealing noise so i removed it, has no shaft play and spins freely.
Let me know

Thanks Gannon, would it be safe to say that the 108.6mm line on the TF035 flange is on the same plane as the 98.6mm line on the VF2 (I.E. would it cross the center of the vf2 hole at 98.6)?
With the turbos, for sure bring them up with you if you come, i'd be keen to see them, never seen a mitsubishi turbo.

I drew some lines and traced out the hole with the VF4 flange on, and no they dont quite line up.

I notice that you keep mentioning the VF2.
I was under the impression that the VF2 was the non water cooled turbo from EA81's, and the VF4 was the water cooled from AUDM EA82T's with the 12R housing. I think the USDM, JDM and EUDM got the VF7, which has the 15R exhaust housing. Disco is the guy to ask on this.
As for what turbo to use, i think just stick with the EJ style flange, then you can choose between the TF035, which has a smaller exhaust turbine and more restrictive housing than the VF4, or you could go a TD04, which has a larger exhaust housing than the VF4 and is a lot less restrictive than both the VF4 and TF035
TD04's are cheap and easy to come by on ebay and WRX forums
