hey guys my RX has a 3" exhaust from the turbo out. no mufflers except the cannon. (which is 8" barrel and 6" tip)
do yous think its a bit over kill, the guy at the exhaust shop says, a few hotdogs will shut it up but im not sure

I don't think any 'dogs are gonna solve a smokey motor.

Yes I think it is WAY WAY too large . I don't know what possessed you to go that large on an 1800 dinosaur engine like an EA82T .

From memory the works RX's made something like 190 crank horsepower which is not a lot by todays standards . The ancient std turbo design won't make a lot of power and these engines don't breathe too well so they don't rev effectively vey high .

A reasonably well developed EA82T with headwork and better manifolds ie Spider and a real exhaust manifold and realistic turbo and effective intercooling should make something up to that in drive it daily form .

I think I mentioned recently that 2.25" is as large as I'd go in an RX and more than good enough for the 130 odd most people may get with the sort of budget most have .

Huge exhausts often create more problems than they solve , they are HEAVY expensive/hard to package and hard to silence .
A WRX doesnt need a 3 inch drain pipe to make a std 160 Kw (213 Hp) so why would an EA82T ?
If it were me I'd be doing it on the cheap by buying a 2nd hand rex exhaust and grafting it into your RX . A lot of this stuff is near new and selling very cheaply for what it is .

I'd go from a rexes turbo flange back and make alterations to suit .

I run a 3" mandrel dump pipe. It makes a HUGE difference to how fast it boosts when you come off the throttle & reapply the throttle....

In my experience this ends up being just as expensive with the massive amounts of time it takes to do. The wrx exhaust bends are all wrong for an L series. I did this with a complete wrx exhaust to my L series, we didn't end up using that much of the original system in the end, and I spent a fair bit buying 45degree bends which is needed to make the changes required.

I used to run 3” off the dump straight through on my old RX, I have 3” off the dump into a 2.5” system on my current EA82T wagon and I plan to have 3” off the dump and system on my current RX built. I would not want a huge cannon in the rear however I have decided that I am getting old(er) and conservative.

Yeah 2.5" is about the max you'd want to go for the main exhaust for a small engine. You loose too much back-pressure otherwise, most exhaust shops will tell you that.

No Mike, what I said is that I am getting old(er) and conservative, should you wish to do this its all good

Oh I did also say that I was currently running a 3” system myself so if this is conservative imagine what I use to be like.

Is there any advantage in having an exhaust (or just the tip) that is bigger than the air intake on the motor?

Probably to an extent.

There is a much larger volume coming out the exhaust compared to the air coming into the engine, this is due to the fact it has been mixed with a fuel and ignited, producing a hotter, less dense gas. That being said, a less dense gas also flows easier through a pipe because it creates less friction.

As for large cannons/exhaust tips, there is no point (performance wise) having a 4inch cannon if you only have a 2inch exhaust. You'd probably get more preformance from a 4inch exhaust with a 2inch cannon

the exhaust was on it when i bought it
i was told 2.5" is ample so im thinkin of reducing it all for that lil bit extra performence
and to quieten it down i bit

my 2.25 inch turbo back works a treat esp with the small cannon on the back. growls nicely. from what ive heard it is the best combp for performance and sound for an older subi

My Brumby Has a three inch mandrel bent stainless (un polished)turbo back exhaust with a highflow cat, two hotdog mufflers and a offset glass pack muffler it has nice quiet warble at idle but sounds sweet at full noise. I am 25 and think it is a little loud at highway speeds thinking of reducing size of tailpipe to 2 1/2 to take drone away when highway crusing. Drive Half our to work every day gets a little monotanous

2.5in on the RX with a 3in dump back to the cat then reduces after the cat to 2.5 to a single straight through muffler not a cannon. It is quiet around town but has a nice not when given what for.
