Im chasing a bit of advice. i need a new exhaust for my L but im unsure of wat the best set up is.
Im looking at increasing the performance but dont want it to sound like a rocket taking off, im chasing more of a nice boxer note.
Any suggestions would help...
Scott.

2" is heaps of gain for a1.8L,carby,speshly if you dont want a headache
rear muffler is key-straight through you lose low end torque
-baffled you lose high revs power
-cannon-same as first but you lose your hearing too
-wagons make more cabin drone---panadol
some perhaps useless tips-
keep in mind many 6cylinders are happy with 2"....up to 3L carby this is plenty
i set up an XU1 triple carby torana last week with 2" and twin tail pipe rear (like factory setup)it sounded big too.

For most power and least noise make the Y pipes equal length. A mate's dad builds exhausts for a living and says this is the easiest way to get some power from any subi running the Y pipe...

Could i just ask a question related to this....I'm about to build myself a new 2" exhaust also and wanted to no if getting a 2.5" cat (I have access to one) would be a good idea, (my theory being a little bigger and a little less back pressure). Would this be worth it or would there be little difference?
cheers

If you were to feed the engine pipes into it and use a slow taper reducer behind it I cant see any probs .
Many "high flow cats" just have larger pipe fittings at each end , its the matrix area and design that makes or breaks its gas flow abilities .
Cheers A .

Yea thats what i was thinking of doing, so then you have a bit of a wider diameter to help with exhaust flow where most of your back pressure is caused and in theory reducing it.

got the new exhaust on the L 2" strait trough with a muffler and 2"1/2 tip. it sounds nice but too loud for my liking... know for next time...

gday dutchy, are you using a canon? cos im doing exactly what you've done and im kinda worried im going to get this annoying drone which rattles my whole car. I was just planning on using a lukey sports exhaust.....

seriously 2" is'''big''' for this car..that size pipe is ample for such horse power and any bigger- jepardises(spelling?) -torque ---which in my car -was not what the doctor ordered!!!
unless you want to really hear a boom consistently---stick with a baffled muff-(plenty of flow!! and plenty of boxer noise)unless you run a turbo- in which case noise is not an issue(turbo is the best exhaust note silencer)
ok i cant talk--i have a little cannon on the back, but ive added an extra resonator (3 mufflers + cat. all together.)too make it comfortable
oh yes-you really shouldnt be able to fit a muffler where i put that one-
attached immediately in front of the cannon.

no canon just a sports muffler and there is no drone at all, quiet when crusing then nice note when the foots down

Hi guys, rather than start a new thread, this is a similar question to mine, however I'd love to get a few things clarifed that a newbie subi owner doesn't know.
I've just purchased a 92 L Series Wagon, and am keen on getting the exhaust done to not be loud, but if under a bit of juice in second the 'subaru note' was there, I'd be well chuffed.
Having not seen the car yet (it's 800kms away and was a complete bargain, but all I have to go on today is that it's mechanically great, but standard). A not so technical person has told me it 'looks' like a carbie, but a bit weird. So I'm guessing its AE82, with carb, rather than injected.
What I was hoping to get clarified is, do the headers/extractors/exhaust manifold of a standard 92 L Series have the offset length, which produces the Subi note if you modify the exhaust? (I've used the search and gone through the Exhaust section and haven't seent his specifically asked).
Obviously if yes, what would the suggestions be to keep the subi note 'apparent' but not overly loud. If no, is there an easy/cheap/recommended way of going about it getting that note out of your vehicle (or is it considered not worth the effort)?
If there are specifics about the vehicle that will impact the answer, I'll bug the guy who's got it and get the answers, or if I've missed a post or thread that answers this please just throw me a link or hint for the specific search
Appreciate any advice or help.

its the un-even headers that give the subi note. Just get a 2 1/4 cat back system with a hotdog and a strait thru sports muffler. Itll make you very happy

Cool. So it's got the uneven headers in as standard. That's the main thing.
Means it's simply a matter of giving it a bit less obstruction between cat and exhaust tip till it's the volume I'm after.
Thanks for your help Alex. Once I actually get the car in 2 or 3 weeks I'll grab some pictures, and further info on what it's had done and see what suggestions you veteran Subi owners and modders think are appropriate.

the pipe size isn't as important as having good fast gas flow. 2" would be the biggest pipe size i would go, and i would probably use a 2" cat. My next two exhaust pipes (which I am going to have a go at building) are going to be mandrel bent 2" systems, all straight though. Cat and resonator on one (the subi) and two resonators on the other (the toyota).
I'm the sort of person that would have a go at equal lenth headers on the subi, just to actually see what happens...
and I'm also the sort of person that puts a 2" tip on a 2" system, if you put a funnel on the end it makes that horrible boomy noise. some of the worst exhaust i've ever seen had canons on the back...

You'll loose the subi beat, and gain a little bit of power unless you've got an EA82 in which case you probabily won't notice it anyway.
Subaru now produces all EJ series with equal extractors including the WRX's - these sports subi's have lost their famous beat for an extra 10 or 20 kW of power...

can't vouch for new wrx (the fugly model) but I was in an impreza "r" the other day and it still sounded like a boxer engine. From memory the wrx I drove sounded like a boxer engine too but I wasn't paying attention to the exhaust headers when I serviced it anyway.
Will probably not see a "new" (fugly) impreza for a little while, I'm no longer working for the subaru dealership, I now work for ultratune. So it will happen, I will get to see some subaru's, but not as many or as often...

ok, now i've heard before and after videos of equal length and uneven length headers on a wrx and i'm going to jump on the bandwagon with the equal length advocates, sounds sooo much healthier!!! i thought it still sounded like a subaru too, just a lot healthier. like a cranky little riceburner, but thats what it is hey?

Hey guys, i just bought a 1986 L wagon and im getting it tuned shortly but im also at a bit of a loss as to what is best to go with when it comes to the exhaust. Is a 2 1/4 cat back system with a hotdog and a strait through sports muffler the way to go? i was thinking maybe the lukey ultra flow muffler thats glass packed?? It lacks power, hence the tune up, but i dont want a loud exhaust, i still want to be able to hear the engine grumbling...exhausts arent my thing so any help would be greatly appreciated.
