Tyre recommendation for Forester

I have an 04 Forester X and I need new tyres. I really have no idea what to get. Should I just get the cheapest? I would like something with decent grip but not top of the line. Basically I just want the best tyres I can get for around $600 all up. (ie $150 per tyre). If there's something way better for a bit more than this then I'd consider that. I only drive on the road, no off-road driving.

Suggestions?

So you are looking for a road only? I don't have any suggestions haha, but
If not, check out - http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d693.aspx (Bridgestone D693) for a grippy A/T. But as I found out today, these are no longer in production. It has been replaced with the D694, which just has a redefined grip. You should be able to find the new one on the site. .

Pardon me, they do still make the D693, but at $255 a wheel its your call haha!

D693 are definately still made in a 215/65R16C

thats the OEM size on the holden AWD utes.. they are hardly going to stop making them

I'm onto my 2nd set of 215/60R16 95H Michelin Energy XM1's they are good in both wet & dry conditions, mine cost me $612.00 fitted & balanced.

I got mine from Jax Quickfit Tyres and they have some specials currently running but don't know if they include 215/60R16 95H, no harm in asking negotiating a price.

Edit: I forgot to add they are quiet on the road and when cornering unlike the "Geosquealers".

I have the same tyres on my Commodore, and I must say they are a great imporvement - paid about the same price also.

Supercats!!! I've driven a few different cars with them on, and they seem to be pretty good bang for your buck. Not insanely cheap but not dear either, they wear good, and don't scare the christ out of me when doing brake tests even in the wet.

To top this off, I work with a bloke who owns a subaru forester, and he tells me that he had all the problems in the world with rear tyres wearing odd especially towing a caravan, when he was running the geolandars. He now runs a set of supercats, and he is really really happy with them, they don't wear funny or make horrible noise or anything like that.

I'm running bfg sport t/a tyres on my L at the moment, and I'm not overly happy with them, they feather really easy, are noisy on the road, and they have gone quite hard after 10,000km, and aren't quite as grippy as they were when they were new. I didn't know about supercats when I bought these, or else thats what I'd be running.

This is a shameless plug isn't it?

I haven't heard anything bad about the michelins other than some sets not wearing out, they get nearly worn out, still legal, and don't wear any more, and go insanely hard and become very dangerous. Not sure if new michelins do this though, this was common a few years back.

Geolandars, I have not heard much good stuff about them.

Anyway, thats my 2c worth.

Personally, i would never ever buy "cheap" rubber. For me, i think it is a safety issue.
I whole heartedly advise "pirelli dragon's" i run them on both of my subys and find and abundance of traction on all sealed road conditions even when i was running out of tread. I've trial'd a few others but for the performance and safety they are some of the best.
Around $220 a corner though. Well worth the investment on your prized suby.
They got me out of a few hairy situations, where a lesser tire would have thrown me off the road.
And they look angry as hell!
