14" tyres for unlifted L series

Post by GOD » Thu Jun 11, 2009 8:26 pm

Just thought I'd share my experience for anyone who's interested.

I did have 27x8.5" Super Trippers on my L series, but wasn't real happy with them. They were noisy, seemed to cut easily on the rocky ground around here, and the fronts required removal of mudflaps and guard liners. They also looked cool or silly depending on your point of view, because they are massively out of proportion with the rest of the car.

So I started looking for something a bit smaller, but still reasonably robust. There are stacks of different 185R14 light truck tyres that would suit, but I chose Sumitomos because they were middle of the range in price, and have an openish pattern.

Very happy with them - so much quieter than the Super trippers, hang on reasonably well on wet roads, go alright in mud, and haven't shown any signs of damage after a couple of rocky outings. Increased my top speed, too:cool:.

They're close enough to fitting inside the guards, even with the wrong offset Desert Rats, and I reckon they'd fit without any cutting or bashing (but I've already done that).

Doesn't show much of the tyres, but here's a gratuitous car pic:

so with light truck tyres gives harder ride because the rubber is harder - hence less likely to get torn?
Cheers

Yeah, LTs generally have a harder rubber compound and more plies, so they should get fewer chips, cuts and punctures. Haven't noticed any change in the ride.

thats good to know. After a mud outing on the weekend that involved more slide then traction ive been trying to find some info on what tyres are worth while.
