Speedy rims on MY wagon

Post by Cliff R » Sat Nov 27, 2010 11:51 am

The following may be of interest to someone.
Had enough of battling with my 14" steel rims on my 82 MY touring wagon. Had them for a year of so and my car did not like them. They looked like Sunraisiers but were made by some company called ROH. They would balance properly and then vibrate when braking and driving.
Their offset was crap (too far outside the guards for my liking). Went back to the wreckers where I got them (they originally came off an L series) and said what have you got in the way of original, 4 stud, white factory style Subaru Sunraisier rims. My choices were the original Subaru Sunraisers (13 x 5") or a set of Speedys (13 x 5.5") I went for the Speedys. The Speedys were a bit rough but should clean up OK. The offset is perfect which I thought odd as I was under the impression most aftermarket rims had bad offsets. These are excellent. Two of the tyres that came with the rims were OK but two were stuffed. Replaced the two stuffed tyres from my set of orignal factory Alloy Subaru 13 x 5" rims (these alloys seem to be fairly rare so want to put them away and not use at the moment) and tried the Speedys out. All I can say is with the 185/70/13 the car handles pretty good. The tyres which were on the 5" Alloy rims fit better on the 5.5" rims and seem to have less body roll. In all the 13" Speedys have turned out to be a better prospect. By the way, I swapped the 14s back to the wreckers for the 13s at no cost to me. He put the 14s on his Brumby. Hope he has better luck than me. I told him all about the issues I had with the 14s and this did not worry him.

Sounds like a good deal, be careful mixing tires as tread and diameter differences can mess with your 4wd

Yep, all the tyres are 185/70/13 but the rear two are one brand and the front two that came with the rims are a different brand. I have two tyres the same as those I put on the rear on my other two Alloys but would like to keep them for now as spares. I would like a couple more Speedy rims as one of the set has possible light cracks near one of the wheel studs so would like to use this one as a spare and other one on the car.
