Rims and Tyres for MY09
Rims and Tyres for MY09
I am looking to get some new CHEAP rims that can get scratched and some AT tyres for a 2nd set. I currently have 215/65R16 tyres.
I thought any Rims, Forester and most Subaru, would fit but apparently not.
What do I need to know for Rims? And anyone have any cheap?
I was thinking of going Cooper tyres?

I'm in the same boat as you... In my case, I am downsizing from 17 inch rims to 16 inch steelies to fit AT tyres.
The direction I'm taking is getting Subaru Forester rims, which are usually largely available and spot on what you need for your car in terms of dimensions. The OEM rims are 16x6.5in with a +48mm offset. The bigger the offset, the further "in" the wheel will sit in the well. Smaller offsets are required if you want to go to large tyre widths, say 235 and above, so the tyre sits a bit further "out" and you may need flares...
The best website I've come across for tyre-related stuff is the following:
http://rimsntires.com/specs.jsp
With your MY09, you can comfortably fit a 215/70R16, which is a common size on many AT tyres, such as the BFG ATs and the Cooper AT3s, along with the Yoko Geolandars A/T-S, which are a great compromise tyre for the ones who want to leave the tyres on all the time.
Cheers,
Pedro.

Iv just received my new rims! 4 new steel Forester rims! Looking to buy another 2 and paint them all black! Do I just hand paint or should I get them done properly?
I want to put some OFF-ROAD tyres on them! Id like to try Coopers tyres again.
My current tyres are 215/65R16 Cooper CS4's.
So QU is...
Do I put bigger tyres on them?
Size?
Suggestions for which ones?
I have been told I would loose power and it might be illegal?

As they're dedicated offroad tyres, I'd go as big as will fit. You have to clear the spring perch & not rub on the front on full lock.
Your tyres 215/65/16 are 686mm diameter or 27".
Not sure if 225/70/16 (722mm, 28.4") or 225/75/16 (744mm, 29.3") will fit but IMO the bigger the better
You'll get more ground clearance, the tyres will balloon better for soft sand & should handle the rough stuff better too.
You can check sizes & how much it will affect your speedo here:

As for manufacturer, I like Yoki Geolander AT-s for their all round (on AND off road) ability, but consider BFG or Coopers for offroad.

Anyways, to answer Jerrad's question, if I had an MY09, I would buy some BFGs or Cooper's AT3 in 215/70R16 size in a heartbeat... I will be getting some of these for off-roading later this year for my MY07...
In your case, you're going from 686mm to 708mm, which is 22mm more. The official legal limit is +15mm, so you're not too far off.
P.S.: I am also looking for another 2 rims of the same model as yours. If you get another 4, I am happy to take 2 of them from you, conversely, I am happy to sell you 2 if I buy 4!
Cheers,
Pedro.

Haha, that was too long ago for me to remember lolpezimm wrote:Hahaha, same link as I posted before, Matt!!

Will 215/75/16 or 225/75/16 fit? The extra profile will (IMO) help the tyres bag out a lot better for rocky tracks & esp soft sand.Anyways, to answer Jerrad's question, if I had an MY09, I would buy some BFGs or Cooper's AT3 in 215/70R16 size in a heartbeat... As these are offroad only (plus getting to & from), if it was me I wouldnt be too worried bout it being slightly larger than legal. I reckon most offroad big 4WDs would have tyres WAY over! But thats just me, you need to make that decision yourself lol

Im trying to buy some more in melbourne then with your advice Im going to go to a tyre place and have a chat too and see what I come up with... I like the sound of going from 65 to 70 though... Im not sure about going TOO big... I find some of it abit confusing without actually talking face to face
Thanks! Jerrad!

Tyre sizing is ridiculously confusing. Don't worry, you're not alone!Jerrad wrote:Im trying to buy some more in melbourne then with your advice Im going to go to a tyre place and have a chat too and see what I come up with...
