correct nuts for L Series RX H mags ??
Just wondering the L Series RX H pattern mags used wheel nuts other than our usual dome nuts of all other 4x140 steelies, maybe more surface area ?

Pretty sure they're the long nut variety. Don't know what you'd call them, but that's what came with the H-Style RX mags I was advertising before. Don't know if they were stock or not but they seem like the right thing

On my RX they are just like the standard chrome ones, just black

Hmm, well maybe the chickie just had the long ones on so they were easier to get at? The recess in the alloy is pretty deep.
Surface area I'd have to agree and say the bog stock chromed nuts (dome) would have the most.

Too much boost??steptoe wrote:thanks, I like the stats - 2 out of 2 RX owners have black nuts.

Yeah maybe, otherwise one could be seen to be asking too much of their subi! Pretty good effort though!steptoe wrote:Might just have to accept that 283,000km and 28 years is OK for a wheel bearing to crumble slowly with a few hints along the way.
Was it the rear left that went first?

and not that this thread has such a related to topic title anymore ....bearings have held up, make no noise, was getting a squik, squik noise from time to time, found the rear hub or bearings had some play. From afar away as Halifax UK ,in 9 foot snow drifts, 1111giles made comment he had a problem drive him nuts until he replaced the split cone washer, tapered? washer and nut. Having spent more time thinking about this repair approach over the last four weeks, I had a bright idea to flog nice washers from my Vort wreck in readiness for this job. Ripped rear wheel off to get split pin out, undid nut with my fingers - where was its 180 foot pounds ? eh ?? Noticed the cone shaped washer had worn into the slight tapered washer, donors did not, so whacked them on , jumped on my extended breaker bar and 36mm socket and done. Test drive nice so far.
Giles baby ! Many thanks for throwing that comment in ! I was worried I'd be on a search for a new rear disc hub :effenphew:

biggest problems with the taper washer is when they are worn they get an 'edge' lip on the taper face, this stops them tightening up to the required tension. The other thing to check is where the taper was sits in the hub, this needs to be perfectly round and not dented in any way.

I'll admit I've been dodgy with this taper washer. If it has an edge on it I grind it down flat again and re-use it.RSR 555 wrote:biggest problems with the taper washer is when they are worn they get an 'edge' lip on the taper face, this stops them tightening up to the required tension.
I've not had a problem doing this... yet
