I've been searching for the best all terrain tyre for me too.
I've found that the Desert Duelers haven't been made for enough time that no-one stocks them any more in the 14" size.
I have read some people's signatures reading that they are running them but I've not been able to find anyone with them in Sydney even when they call the warehouses.
Question is... what IS available for the 14 inch rims?
I've done a quite a bit of online hunting and found:
Maxxis MA-751 Bravo Series
185R14 LT 8ply all terrain
185R14 C 8 ply all terrain
Maxxis MT-753 Bravo Series
185R14C 8 ply rating mud terrain tyre (25.5 inch diameter)
$120
195R14C 106R 8 ply rating mud terrain tyre (26 inch dia.)
Maxxis MT-754 Buckshot Mudder
27x8.5R14LT 95Q 6 ply rating (26.3 inch dia.)
Goodyear Wrangler TG
185R14 102N – mud terrain
$139
Nankang 828/829 Wild Conqueror
27x8.5R14 LT 95S (674mm dia.) (prod. code E0127)
$120
Dunlop Adventurers
185R14
$158 (LESS?)
If you want to spend more then you can go to the Coopers as well and I've found details of a few makes made in the US that I'd doubt would be at a reasonable price here compared to those above.
I know this isn't a comprehensive list though. There are some Michelins and Kumhos too but I haven't any idea about what they are or how good they are.

'91 Sportswagon - 3" lifted, 14" speedys, 27" Nankangs + lots of small details improved. Wouldn't mind some extra grunt from an EJ.

While I'm here I may as well ask for me, too, (feel silly for asking) as I have an L-series wagon with a 3" lift. Do I have to cut the front guards to run 27" tyres? There seems to be a lot of people saying that they still rub on the firewall anyway at full lock. If so, then I might steer clear of the hassle as I've done fine for three years on the 185R14's for three years.

yo,
well mine did rub once upon a time on the firewall..nothing a gimpie can stop!...also sometimes they hit the front part of the fender(only minorly), just a tad of guard trimming was required, this is with a 3inch lift and 205/75/r14 tyres..(26.5inch)

I believe the BFG AT is not suitable on a Brumby. I put it down to a combination of not enough tread void (too much rubber on the road) and compound. Either way you may find they cause your Brumby to aquaplane.BRUMBI wrote:ive been looking at the BFG's All Terrains there $188 ea
I'd go for something else.

I've read a lot of messages suggesting the same as Brumbyrunner in that the BFG's aren't an improvement over any of the others to make the cost worthwhile. The basic fact with most of these tyres is that they are all designed to be for light trucks and not featherweights like Subies. 8 ply sidewalls just don't give the ride the would on a much heavier vehicle. I love the cornering ability though...
I'm really torn between the Dunlop Adventurers versus something like the Maxxis. I've been through so many wet and muddy conditions and had little fuss with the tread pattern on them. They do need to be warmed up for best grip though. I was under the impression (however I've already been proven wrong once here about availability of tyres) that the Maxxis Mudders would be available. Just last week I spoke to a different shop and they tried selling them to me. They look excellent for off roading. Good news for Daza if you're after some. Just ask another shop and, as much as Bob Jane is the only shop I've found that even has the correct 4 pin wheel balancing tool, they aren't the only ones to shop with.
