I tried that idea when I drove away from the tyre fitters shop. With the 3" lift of mine and the front mud guards taken off I thought it might show up what was left to do. Anyhoo, the short and long of it is that I needed to trim back the footwell side of the front guards - borrowed an angle grinder from work - then bent a new edge for the section I trimmed. Then I did the bashing (with a bit of padding to reduce paint chipping) with a heavy hammer to flatten out the body join in the wheel arch. Otherwise, any slight raise of the wheel when turned, and it will rub pretty hard onto it. All looks fine now with the plastic inner guard back on and the flexi-flares on.
Holy moly they looks so much wider than the 185R14's that I've been running these last 3 years. That width has brought the need to do the trimming as much as the slight increase in diameter.

Hey mate had the same prob here in Vic so I found an even better solution ask about maxxis tyres bob jane even carry them so does Jax Quickfit. They have all terrain pattern, and two types of mud pattern in the 14". I have the intermediate mud pattern and they are the bomb. They rip through everything even at slow speeds in mud I have lumps the size of my fist landing on the bonnet and if I hit the noise pedal I can get rossters 2-3m in the air and the best part is that they dont wear much at all. Ive had about 6mounths and nothing still like new. They were about $110 fitted.
Thats my 2cents.
Cheers

what are peoples views on Kumho Venture M/T 27"x14"? im thinking of getting a set for offroading and then swapping them on when i want to go off road then just switching back to road tyres for normal driving. so i will just get another set of 14'' wheels. so what are peoples ideas about Kumho Venture M/T 27"x14" in terms of price?

They are reasonably priced, and I've heard reports from users that while they work very well off road, they are quite noisy.subusurfer wrote:what are peoples views on Kumho Venture M/T 27"x14"? im thinking of getting a set for offroading and then swapping them on when i want to go off road then just switching back to road tyres for normal driving. so i will just get another set of 14'' wheels. so what are peoples ideas about Kumho Venture M/T 27"x14" in terms of price?
I run two sets of rims - 13" road tyres, and 14" nankangs.
If my Brumby didn't already have the nankangs when I bought it, I'd have fitted the venture m/t's to the 14" rims. When the nankangs wear out I'll most likely go to the venture m/t's, but that'll be some years away as I generally only use these rims when I go off-road.

Do you have a lift on your brumby - I was wanting to run the same set up as you but wasn't sure if
- a) You can run a set of 14" wheels with 27" wheels without lifting the brumby and not have it rubbing the guards??
- b) If you do have say a 2 Inch lift on the Brumby to accomodate the 14"s will it look dikky when you put the 13" wheels back on??

"The Express"
Subaru Brumby 1990
2" B-Y-B LIFT (New)
Power Steering
14" Wheels with Maxxis Bravo MT-753's
Spotties
L-Series Interior Light
Roll Bar (to be added)
My Brumby has a 2" body lift and King Springs.
It doesn't look too bad with the 13" wheels on, but I suppose that's a personal taste and you might hate the look. Given that I travel around 500km a week in the Brumby, with 13"s on I'm wearing out cheap $70 tyres and have the correct tyre to diff ratios for hills or when overtaking slower vehicles, it makes perfectly good sense for me to run 13's on bitumen.
I'm using 14" scorpion rims and 27" nankangs which do rub slightly.
The standard front mud flaps fouled and so these were removed, the guards trimmed back around 18mm, the inner guard's seam tapped flat with a hammer, and a custom mudflap made of 300mm wide strip (bought from clark rubber) was attached using stainless screws and bolts.
The front of the front wheel rubbed slightly too, but some slight trimming fixed that also. Wasn't hard to do, and taking our time it took two of us a few hours to do it all.
My nankangs now only rub slightly on the chassis rails on full lock but there's nothing I can do about that with these size tyres.
Rear wheels don't rub anywhere. No modifications were needed at the rear wheels.

I've read so much about the Kumho tyres saying that they're lethal on wet roads. Great in the mud, noisy as hell on-road and dangerous on wet road (which is likely to be on the way to any muddy track) and at $172 each there are better options on either side of the price. I was pretty well sold on the idea of those Maxxis mentioned earlier here until I found the Nankangs were still available.
