13" rims or steelies?

Post by ChPLAT » Sat May 17, 2008 5:11 pm

Which is the better of the two? I have stock steelies on the brumby now but have heard that the white stock 13" rims handle like sh-eye-t. Wanna get some off ebay and get them chromed.

ps. I like my speedo how it is so don't wanna go bigger... wider would be nice though.

The stock rims (steelies or wagon wheels) suck for handling either way.

14" with a lower profile will keep your speedo correct and improve handling out of sight...

I've also run redrilled 15" rims with 55 profile tyres and it's another step up - damn thing drives like it's on rails! But front wheel rubs on hard cornering and of course forget going off road.

The lower profile tyres cost a fair bit more don't they?

Not until you get into the rubber band sizes - 45 profile or less...from memory I'm running 185/65/14 and they probably more common than the stock 165/75/13 (or 165/70/13, can't recall offhand), and basically the same price.

I certainly wouldn't buy expensive tyres on a Brumby with stock camber as it chews out the fronts real quick...

That's pretty much it, 13 inch tyres are becoming less common and a bit more expensive. 14's will cost a little more but it's probably the cheapest way to improve handling. By the the time you chrome some 13's you could probably buy a set of desert rats and increase the track width while you're at it.

Ok you convinced me in time. I'll save me pennies for some 14's with lower profile tyres. Cheers guys.
