I would recommend you look at about a 24" tyre - 185/70R14 or 195/65R14
These are stock size for early liberty and are easy to get cheap if you dont mind used tyres. I have run both sizes on my old mans L wagon and it goes great up the beach. way better than the stock 13's
How big you can go depends alot on the condition of your springs. If they are in decent nick you wont have any trouble with the above sizes. They fill the guards nicely

I run 185/75/14s on my unlifted subaru.
The only problem I have is that they do scrape the top of the front wheel guards on hard thumps and large hollows in the road which allows the suspension to compress hard enough.
otherwise i generally dont have a problem with them. The car does struggle though when towing a fully laden trailer ( wont get to highway speeds and up hills particularly).
Next time round Im opting for 185/70/ 14s. I think a slight reduction in height will eliminate the guards scraping without losing thee offroad performance

you must be runnig speedy rims for those tyres to be scraping? Or are your springs sagged?
My old mans tyres never rub but hes using a set of scorpion rims. His springs are also in good nick, it sits nice and tall.

yes, good point, I am running speedy rims and the tyres do stick out a tad past the guards.
The suspension is in good nick but the car does carry some weight around as I use it as my work vehicle. It does perform better without the weight admittedly, that is until the family piles in with all their toys to go up the beach!

i run 215/65/R14s on my unlifted L.. Its got king springs wich reduced the scrubbing.. but yes it still srubs whenever the car bounces... or turns full lock in reverse.

I had the same setup - unlifted and Speedy wheels. 195/60R14 was about the limit for me with standard springs
