Spare won't fit storage well

I was playing around with my gen 1 Lib wagon as I'm going to put some bigger rims and tyres on it, but the OB 15" rims with 205/70 that I have lying around won't fit into the spare wheel storage well
Just wondered what have the guys who have put on larger rims and tyres have done?
I don't want to have a smaller diameter spare as If I'm in the country and have to use it I've read this is no good for your diff, I did think maybe I could let air out and try and squeeze it in, but then I'd be putting on a flat tyre if I had to put on the spare.
I didn't want to go with bracket on the tailgate and I carry around a lot of stuff that takes up room in the back.
I could take to the wheel well with a mallet and do some reverse panel beating.
What have others done or any suggestions?
