Spare won't fit storage well

I was playing around with my gen 1 Lib wagon as I'm going to put some bigger rims and tyres on it, but the OB 15" rims with 205/70 that I have lying around won't fit into the spare wheel storage well :(
Just wondered what have the guys who have put on larger rims and tyres have done?
I don't want to have a smaller diameter spare as If I'm in the country and have to use it I've read this is no good for your diff, I did think maybe I could let air out and try and squeeze it in, but then I'd be putting on a flat tyre if I had to put on the spare.
I didn't want to go with bracket on the tailgate and I carry around a lot of stuff that takes up room in the back.
I could take to the wheel well with a mallet and do some reverse panel beating.
What have others done or any suggestions?

Just bash it "gently" and it will fit!

I've gone through the process in my Forester when I moved from OEM 215/55R17 to 215/60R17.

Have a look here!

Thank for the link and pics Pedro, I thought that was an option. I just wasn't sure if the metal would bend and give enough.

You could always cut the rear floor section from that Outback before it goes to the big place in the sky.. then get some nice cold beers around to your local panel beater and see how much he'd charge you

I beat the crap out of mine to try making it sort of squarer for carrying stuff and didn't do any harm, not like it's a new car so give it a go first...............It's free.

Then i'd be putting on a flatish tyre, I could aslo carry around a mini compressor.
