Is my Peugeot alloy destroyed??? Pics

Post by Kelossus » Sat May 26, 2012 5:26 pm

I know i am an absolute idiot but i fitted my 15" peugeot alloys with the normal L series wheel nuts.

Tragedy occurred, the wheel fell off. I am absolutely shattered. I spent money getting these rims shipped up to me then powder coated. Went out and bought all new tyres for them only to have myself to blame for rooting them.

I will lose all will to live if I have stuffed all the wheels. Please see the pics attached and give me your opinion. This is the wheel that fell off, I have not taken the others off to inspect damage.

Also are the pug nuts hard to find? Read a couple of threads and some people say they are hard to source but another poster said you can pick them up from any mag shop?

Why do you need pug nuts when the thread is the Subaru thread?
Would only have thought that you would need to change if you changed the studs.
How did it fall off?

The nuts didnt have much backing to support them and they bored the hole out a bit.

Don't like stating the obvious or being the bearer of bad news but remove the other wheels and check how much meat is left around the lug holes, cause going on what you have said and what the pics show I tend to think the wheels have had a hard life before you got them.
If they are all like that one and you keep using them you are putting yours and others lives at great risk.

So should the normal subaru wheel nuts support the peugeot wheels enough?

It's hard to say with out actually offering the nuts with a light smear of grease on the outer surface up to the wheels and physically seeing how much and where they are making contact, I very much doubt if there is any more than 20 percent and in any case I would definately not be using them.
On an enlargement of the pics it looks as though there is some serious fretting of the wheel material

Pug wheels must have Pug nuts! Simple really. The normal (Subaru) tapered wheel nuts do not have enough contact area to support the Pug wheels (which are a fairly soft alloy).

The photo steptoe has posted clearly shows the conical shape of Pug nuts. Note the contact area? Anything else will eventually destroy the wheels.

From your photos Kelossus it is easy to see you have damaged the bolt holes (this is the thinnest area on the back of the rim) but if you source the correct nuts you may be able to use them again.

There are conical or ball seat adapters used for VWs which convert tapered nuts to conical (not the same as Pug nuts, however). These are not correct but would certainly be better than nothing at all.

None of the lug nuts on the site would suit?

No, none of the nuts from that site will work. Pug nuts are pretty much unique and the only way (in my experience) to get them new is to have them made.

Do a Google search for 'ball seat conversion washers'. This will show you something you can use as a temporary solution until you source the correct nuts... BUT they still do not have the correct contact with the Pug rims. Which means they are still not safe... So use with caution.

did you know where i can get them made?

I am absolutely shattered about this. I feel like such a fool. The wheel falling off caused someone crumpled the front guard slightly and now i can't open the door properly. I will easily be able to panel beat it to a reasonable finish but I'm gonna go to bed tonight a very angry individual.

I had mine shipped from a USMB member in the States who made some... Entire thread is here:

Sorry do not know anywhere in Oz that makes them. There is a thread on this site (recently brought back from the dead!) that suggested GalPro Engineering was going to make some but I am not sure this ever happened...

Hi Kelossus,
I'm not sure about the normal hex head size if it is 19mm or what but with the ones you have found online that are 17mm, that is about 30% reduction in wall thickness which may sound a lot but with their lifetime guarantee I would think that the nuts are definately made of a high grade alloy not some soft stuff. Plus they also include an adapter for what it's worth. The cost looks like about $4 a nut landed.

Sorry but i dont quite follow? 30% reduction where?

I may sound really stupid but doesnt 17mm hex head mean i will need a 17mm socket to manipulate the bolt?

Is the conical part of the part the same size as the normal pug lugs?

Reduction in the wall thickness at the hex head if the original is 19mm

I may sound really stupid but doesnt 17mm hex head mean i will need a 17mm socket to manipulate the bolt?
Yes/No
They do say that an adapter is supplied

Is the conical part of the part the same size as the normal pug lugs?
More than likely but if unsure just ask a the seller
