A plug for pug lug nuts

Post by steptoe » Thu Jun 28, 2012 9:25 am

"lug nut" seems to be American for wheel nut , to describe a tapered nut.

Pug is the affectionate term for Peugeot - car or pushy - take yer pick

Pug rims of the 1980-89 decade 504, 505 varieties share the same PCD wheel stud pattern of our older MY and L Series subes.

They came with povo pack steelies or the desired ? 15" x 6" alloy rims on the 505 GTi or was it STi and the GTD.

They sort of fill the guards of an L Series when fitted with 195 55 15 tyres, may not be legal if they rub so suggestion is only for show purposes, or off road, but may be too fat for off road tyre choices.

There is two problems, make that three, beyond the legality or ADR compliance of fitting these rims.

One is that the rim has a brother that was made in metric, known as the 390mm which is about 15.25" . The tyres are not easily available, new or used and the price reflects this - so unless you have a secret hoard of 390 tyres and can keep the pug nuts (human enthusiast kind) and Ford fans (some Fairlanes tried the 390 !! ) out you will be OK.

A second thing is the wheel nut , with originals being a steel nut with an alloy cone and taper washer and the genuine superceded is a one piece chrome steel nut. Availability - unless you get the set with mags rims you will not easily find them in SCA, repco, wheel specialist or even French car repair or genuine suppliers. I found two genuine superceded one piece chrome jobbies - and at the 21.00 each was not too concerned with the comment that supplier may not be able to get any more as that would be $240 for nuts.

There is a fix for the nut supply problem if you were considering scoring a set of rims off the fast dropping off the road pugs.

Member here 4x4brat has made his own. Last batch was quite sizeable and has now sold out. Daniel is offering to make more if he can get enough orders. Last price was about $6 ea in a zinc plate I believe, so about $100 for a set of nuts , plus postage costs, and add handling costs as he would be filling in customs forms etc, lining up at the PO. It does make it all possible to dram about the rims that ten years ago pug nuts would like to believe were worth a thousand bucks. Now, the sets can be picked up for one or two hundred plus postage if needed.

I mentioned three pitfalls, the third is that they are regarded as being a soft alloy and can be found buckled, out of round, dinged with flats.

I had one I thought was good, went around a roundabout with it in my boot unsecured you guessed ? and it went thud into the guards inner side popping out a cracked paint bump on the outside :( . Now, i do not know if it is coincidental but, the point of impact rim V's guard, the rim has a flat edge on it now :( ? :(

If you wanna have a go at fitting an illegal to fit non ADR compliant tyre and rim combination to your old Subies for show purposes, consider 4x4brat and his offer to start again. He is a US based member here and on ultimatesubarumessageboard, has gone to the trouble to set up for nut production and offer at what must be cost only price
