14" rims for L series.... tried many they just don't fi

Post by colwyn » Mon May 22, 2006 3:22 pm

Been looking at all the comments and suggestions re fitting 14" wheels to my 87'RX and I have tried the following with each of them protruding out by at least 4 mm's.

Went to a peugeot wreakers tried the 504/505, RHO alloys, scorpions and heaps of others and they just don't fit under the archs and will certainly hit the edges.

Went to Bobjanes etc etc they ordered some speedy options in and though they said they would fit the offset was obv wrong again. 3 sets and the same thing over and over.

Saw some old macque alloys same thing though everyone tells me these were good they were out by 7mm

Confused big time!! can anyone give me a 100% option for a 14" rim that will actually fit. I know a lift kit will help but if they stick out they will hit when 4wd'ing

I have a 86 leonie and it was the same so it wasn't b/c i have a odd car perhaps.

The closest I came to a fit was the peugeot 504 steel rim 5.5 tyre but they still touched when suspension was servierly compressed.

Now another retailer is swearing that they have desert rats that will work but I saw them on a l series wagon today and could see the scrub marks on the tyres though it was lifted and would be ok driving around town.

:? You may need glasses or something as these 14" will fit (Pugs and Scorpions). They are some of the oly correct offset rim on the market. Might have more to do with suspention condition or something. Oh or do you have the bump stops thinges in to restrict the limit of up travel of ya tyers

Funny, the Peugot rims should be ok. Perhapse your tires are letting you down?

Scorpion wheels will definately fit. I've used them with 27x950 BFGoodrich All Terrains and they were inside the guards by a considerable margin.

Try http://www.scorpionsubaru.com for more info on their wheels.

If it helps I have got 14 inch ROH speedie look alikes or sunraysia and have no scrape problems, no lift on my Brumby with 175/70 - 14 Michelins. Brother used to have same size/offset rims on 85 and 88 L wagons no problems expressed, no lift kit.

Thinking you are asking a lot of your little wagon or suspension needs look at

Can you get a low KB photo up of front and rear and side profiles to help us comment ?

I had 14" Peugeot wheels on my old 88 L series, unlifted. Wheels were from a 504. Need the special nuts with oval washers to go with them though.

heres a pic of the current 13" rims

Post by colwyn » Sat May 27, 2006 5:25 pm

heres a pic of the current 13" rims they are aftermarket and scrape too, you can just see how they stick out. I do admit the suspension is soft and thus is maximised easiliy but then we do have a lot of speed humps around here in melbourne that work the car out.

how do you attach a pic there's no option[/img]
The pic has to be hosted on the net somewhere, you can use image station for that.

I just test fitted some pug alloys to my car. They are 14" by 6" alloys off a 505 wagon. While they fit and will not scrape (with 2yr old standard hight suspension), I could hardly say the offset is close to perfect (see pics). They seem to stick out even as far as 1cm.

People who have said the pug wheels have a good ofset have all seemed to use 504 steelies. Pherahps there is a ofset difference between the 504 and 505? I have a few people i can ask about this. Also maybe there's a difference betwen the alloys and steelies? but that just does not make any sense :?

alloys tend to be on the sports side , may be wider than poverty box steelies - are steelies off Pugs 5.5 or 6.0 inch (like the alloys) ?
10mm is not far off that difference

From posting a few Q's on Peugeot forums it seems that 505 sedan steelies (mostly 15") have around 5-7mm more offset than 504 14" steelies. Also the 505 wagons are 15mm wider at the front end than the 505 sedans, and they use all the same components so the suggestion is that the extra 15mm is all in the offset.

The alloys wheels I have are of a 505 wagon, so from this they could have upto 14mm more offset than a 504.

Looks like 504 steelies (and possibly alloys) are the way to go for the correct offset.

But if they stick out...

Post by colwyn » Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:32 pm

As u said they stick out 1cm so really you only have suspention travel up until the wheel touches the outer guard so you loose probably 5cm of travel if the wheel was inside the guard.

Don't you hit the guard when driving over speed humps etc then?? try one at speed and let me know (;

Yeah there the same alloys I was thinking of getting prev at a wreakers how much did u pay.

Hi colwyn

Just wondering if you have had any luck finding a 14incher you like? I am still searchin myself as I am not to happy with the pug alloys.

In theory you should be able to order whatever offset you want from performance wheels, are you giving them a specific offset or just telling them what car you have? Becuase it sounds like you may be getting the MY offset and not the L-series offset or somthing like that.

The desert rats do not have the correct offset but close enough for most poeple as they want the 14" rim for better 4wd tires etc... and will mostly likly have a lift and/or not mind about a bit of scraping.
Also brett has been getting in some wheels that look very similar to the desert rats but with a better offset (not exact but preety close). You may want to contact him about them but he has also been selling them on ebay.

14 inch's on standard suspention

Post by El_Freddo » Fri Jul 28, 2006 8:20 pm

Hey Colwyn,

Just read your thread about getting 14's on your l series. I have a set of Marquis 14 inch alloy's on my car with the standard diameter tyre, that is i'm running a 175/65 R14 tyre.

I have not had any scraping of the guards, even though the front wheel sticks out about half an inch and the rears less than the fronts. I've had it on two wheels diagonally while out bush and did not experience any scrubbing of the tyres.

My sister had the same tyres on her l series leone for a while and she scrubbed the rear right on the guard when she unfortunately stacked the car, effectively putting all the cars weight on the rear tyre (rode the car over a tree... the tree is in the driveway beside the car, and the car is getting its share of pick a part bits tomorrow or sunday... my sister's fine...).

My guess is that the suspention on the standard leone/RX and the 4wd wagon my be different in spring or ride ratings...

If you really want the wheels and don't want to scrape your guards (if this actually occurs) you could get the guards flared out past the tyre.

The other thought i've had is that the wheel doesn't use the area above the guard line, otherwise when cornering you would be putting the wheel into the guard if you hit a large bump...

I have Superlite 15in wheels on my RX and they seem to be just inside the arch both front and rear.

Ebay didn't quite work like that... As you can see they are 6 stud, used to be on a Ford Courier. But $170 for a set of 4 is better then $190(?) each. I will have to messure the offset for you, I'm not sure what it is. I know stock EA wheels are around 54mm to 58mm positive.

I have too much bandwidth anyhow. :) Thanks for the thought.
Now I just need those rear discs and lsd.

These 6" wide superlites have about a 25mm positive offset.

Sorry did't know you got them of ebay, I just assumed you order 4 stud ones from a tyre and wheel place. Looks good though, fit under the gaurds nice. But thats on a MY suby, fairly sure the offset is a fair bit different on the L-series.................. I Think?
