Largest tyre to fit into MY/Brumby spare holder ?

Post by henpecked » Thu Aug 06, 2015 5:10 pm

***********************************************************
EDIT: you can read through this thread or take this as bleeding edge info

EDIT 2024 I don't have any idea why it all fitted below in the MY wagon
the 185/65 DOES NOT fit into the 3 BRUMBY bays that I just test fitted - UNLESS you alter the support bar to be 10mm wider and 20mm lower

sizes that are known "good" for a matched set of 5 rims/tyres EDIT ONLY IN MY MY WAGON back in 2015
13's - 185/75/13
14's - 185/70/14
15's- 185/65/15

Known "Bad" for the spare space
195/55/14
185/60/14
195/60/15

Running 195/60/15s can use/fit a 185/70/14 as your spare (.4mm smaller diameter and a 1.2mm smaller circumference but its "Thickness" will fit into the space under the windscreen) perfect if you have 4 alloy pug 15's and a single pug 14 alloy as your spare as you don't have to worry about carrying a non-alloy-pug set of wheel nuts for your spare.

running 27" x 14 muddies - use a 175SR13 truck tyre on a steel 13" standard rim as your spare.

NOTE: a lift kit DOES NOT change the depth of the body cavity under the windscreen - this continues to set the widest a tyre can be to fit unto the standard spare space.
***********************************************************

Has anyone done this exercise ?

I vaguely remember that a 185/?/14 tyre was just barely able to fit into it vertically/width wise , and my current 195's wont, so I suppose 185 is the limit there, but what about diameter ? ie will a 24", 25" or 26" diameter fit into it ?

I blew out one of the 195/60/15s last week, so that gives me 4 spare 15" rims to put new(ish) tyres onto if I want to get off the old second hand 195/60/15s that are currently on the brumby.

so does anyone know if

185/60/15s
185/65/15s
or
185/60/14s
185/65/14s

fit into the spare wheel holder under the bonnet ?

thanks

I have 185/60-R14's on 14" Desert rats and the spare definitely does not fit under the bonnet :( I can't get it past the Weber air filter, and it's too wide to fit inside that bit under the windscreen.

I had a set of 195/55/14s on one of my wagons I just managed to get a 155/70/14 on a steel Peugeot rim in the spare wheel well with a standard carby setup.

I don't know how easy it would be to get a tire of those specifications these days

Tyre size

Post by majordad1 » Fri Aug 07, 2015 1:25 pm

Henpecked, what dictates the whole thing is rim diameter v profile here is comparison of rim/tyre sizes that are pretty close to the original Brumby fitment in terms of diameter and rolling circumference;

Brumby wheel /tyre 175 70 13 Diameter 575.2mm Circumference 1807mm

14" wheel 185 60 14 Diameter 577.6mm Circumference 1814mm

15" wheel 195 50 15 Diameter 576 mm Circumference 1809.5mm

What this equates to with your speedo reading is this 13" at 100kph indicated

14" reads 100.42kph 15" reads 100.14kph

Thanks tonga , I assume you mean 155/70/15 ? cos 155/70/14 is actually smaller than standard
Standard - 175/75/13 Diameter 592.7mm Circumference 1862mm

155/70/14 . 572.6mm . 1798.9mm
155/70/15 . 598mm . 1878.7mm

thanks for that Majordad , got all that and I have a specific thread all about that here http://www.ausubaru.com.au/showthread.php?t=24979

I was hoping for a quick and dirty answer specifically in respect to the capacity of the under bonnet spare wheel carrier.

a 195 50 15 will fit on the axles and in the fenders, it won't fit in the spare wheel carrier. :(

Tyres

Post by majordad1 » Fri Aug 07, 2015 9:53 pm

Henpecked, I am surprised that the 195 50 15 won't fit in the spare space given the diameter is virtually the same as standard 175 70 13, is the height the problem i.e does it sit up to far. Majordad

Maybe I should clarify my earlier post: by "too wide" I mean it's too thick to fit in that space, The actual diameter of the wheel/tyre looks to be not a problem but you just can't wedge it in that space. Would need a narrower tyre or space saver.

Don't know for sure but my guess is a 175/60r15 would fit

Just measured the wheel well space

Image

the black line is approximately 18cm from the curve of the wheel well to under the wiper guard the red line is 30cm from the firewall curve to the encapsulated nut.

so when you compare a 155/70/14 tire to a 175/70/13 tire you get

Image

stolen from here https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?ti ... -175-60r15

I don't think you will get anything bigger than a 175/55/15 in the wheel well but feel welcome to try if you know a patient tire fitter as I did years ago.

Thanks for all that work Toonga, really appreciated.

just for those who are still interested, bear in mind that I am trying to find the largest diameter that will fit, hopefully both for my 27" mud tyres, but also to get a good 15" match for my 195/60/15's to go onto my 15" Peugeot spare rim.

I've just dragged out some samples of my hoarding and found that

185/60/14 15 mm smaller than standard diameter
185/70/13 4 mm smaller than standard diameter

both fit ( tested) so 185 width may be OK

I purchased used 4 x 27" 14" Mud Kumhos tyres from Steve at Rising Sun several years ago, I just remembered he got me a "special tyre" that he said was the biggest diameter spare that he found could fit under the bonnet, which would give me a spare in the under bonnet space.

I've just found it, it has a perished valve so I cant use it, it fits absolutely fine, but right up against the firewall and both vertical "sides" of the "U" support bar, so its definitely the largest diameter that can fit. It is actually a larger diameter that the 195/60/15s

its a 175SR13.

and no that's not a missing number

see here

155/SR/13 - What does it mean?

and here

"SR" Aspect Ratio Tires

but that still does not give me a figure for the circumference of the 175sr13 tyre, but it gives me some hope as it is clearly a bigger diameter/circumference that the 195/60/15's

so given that the SR s are larger then the 195/60/15s (diameter 615mm) I wonder if 185/65/15 (diameter 621.5mm) would fit. it looks certain that a 175/65/15 ( diameter 608.5) would be fine.. It looks like I need to go to a tyre shop

and remember never to put the odd size tyre on the rear LSD.

Ok

I think I just just found my spare

185/70/14s Diameter 614.6mm Circumference 1930.8mm

JUST jam fits into the under bonnet holder, its VERY tight on the diagonal when going in/out and seems to be right up against both of the sides of the "U" bracket - s

given that that's a .4mm smaller diameter and a 1.2mm smaller circumference that the 195/60/15's it seems I may have a viable spare on all axles., even if I have to change wheel nuts to use it.

You definitely won't fit a 27 inch diametre tyre in there unless you've got a 6 inch lift kit, the the world is your oyster ;)

I've heard of people running with the spare flat to allow it to fit easily. When it's needed they pump it up with the compressor they always carry with them.

If you really need to run a different sized rear tyre and have a rear LSD (lucky bugger!) then pull a rear drive shaft or both for that matter. That'll isolate the LSD and you won't have an issue. Besides, I thought you needed power input to induce the LSD into working, or have I got that wrong?

Cheers

Bennie may have hit the nail - You can fit a slightly larger tyre if you have a 'full' lift kit installed, as the engine sits lower.
May also need to bend the tyre carrier & support mechanisms down a tad ... ;)

I'm not sure how much bigger space that will give you though

I do know on my '82 Touring Wagon which has 50mm lift & easily fits a 185x75 R13 tyre ...

Cheers, Bantum ...

A viscous LSD will, but normally LSDs lock the rear axle until enough force causes them to slip, like when cornering with grip.

As for the spare holder, I find it makes a nice little shelf to put tools on and that's about it.

Running 185/65/15's and in the spare, the holder does not centre.

Re: Largest tyre to fit into MY/Brumby spare holder ?

Post by henpecked » Wed Apr 07, 2021 10:21 pm

UPDATE !!!

For some totally unknown reason, the exact tyre that is shown in the above photo of a MY touring wagon - will not fit into the same space in a 1989 Targa Brumby !!!!???

the aircleaner seems to be 10-15mm closer to the firewall and is preventing the tyre from slipping down into the firewall/bonnet sill slot.

As far as i know there are no issues that should have made the engine retreat 10mm to 15mm rearwards - but there we are.
Its not an issue related to engine height/lift kits etc as its not the engine height that is the issue.

Ahh well. ;)

Weird!

I wonder...could the touring wagon and the Brumby have different intake manifolds/carbie versions, which would affect the position of the air cleaner?

Interesting about the space difference with the touring wagon vs the targa brumby. What year model is/was the touring wagon?

Does the targa brumby have the stock intake and carb fitted, or is there an L series intake/Weber carb in the mix here? If stock it does seem odd. Maybe someone put replacement engine mounts in backwards if that’s even possible??

Good info none the less!

Sorry I'm not near my Touring wagon to be able to check that measurement ... :/
Mine is an Auto if that makes any difference in the mounting position of engine forwards an extra few mm ?
