Tyres for 02 Outback?

Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives to the Geolanders for the '02 Outback, I've heard from other people that if you don't use the correct tyre the AWD system will chew them out within 5000km's.
I'm prepared to get the geolanders if I have to but I need 3 tyres before rego in a week and it's just not a good time of year for spending nearly $900 on tyres if it can be avoided.
I've already tried ebay, not alot going on there at the moment.

My parents' Forester came with Yokohama Geolandars, they are a crap tyre and should be avoided at all costs! I'm not sure of the exact tyre, but they've replaced the front pair with some Toyos, same size and profile. When the Forester is put into a hard corner now, the back tyres (still Geolandars) squeal before the fronts!
So long as you keep the profile and width the same you should be right in regards to the centre diff.

I think those ppl meant the AWD system will chew itself out rather than the tyres. Yeah just make sure the profile is correct.
Although I have heard from people that even if the profile is identical but the brand is different there is still a very slight difference which can add up to a flogged out centre LSD over enough kms.
Not really sure of the validity of that though.

OK went to get the tyres today, spoke to someone who owns and drives suby's (and has converted his family to suby's too) and the poop is if you get a cheap arse nasty set of tyres the AWD system will bald the tyres in about 5000km's.
As long as you get a good quality tyre and make sure all tyres are the same profile there will be no dramas, he recommended other models of yoko, bridgestone, khumo and pirrelli.
Now running khumo's which I got for $135 each (mates rates
) they are heaps quieter than the geolanders and so far have a generally nicer feel.
Yet to see how the behave when pushed/in the wet
