Spare wheel issues - Brumby

Hey everyone,
I've got an '89 brumby which is pretty well still stock at the moment, but I've just bought 14" wheels and as a result the spare doesn't fit in the allocated space under the bonnet anymore.
Just wondering what other brumby owners have done about this problem.
I thought some people might keep a standard 13" under the bonnet as a spare but you'd be pretty screwed if you were out bush somewhere.
And i don't really want to have a spare taking up space in the tray..
So has anyone done anything inventive like modified the space in the engine bay to fit a bigger wheel somehow??
Anyway, I appreciate any suggestions you can give me.
Cheers,
Tommo.

age old problem.
try jaming an aired down fullsize spare under the bonnet and carry a 12v compressor.
I just put mine in the back.

I usually drive around with 13's on my Brumby and only change over to 14's when I plan to go 4WDing. My 13 spare sits under the bonnet all the time, and the 14 spare goes in the tray with the rest of my recovery kit.
If you want to carry a 14 spare and keep the tray clear, then an option to look at is to stow it on the cab roof. Buy a pair of roof bars from any auto shop. Ratchet strap the 14 spare directly to the roof bars, or fab up a marine ply mounting board. Some downsides of a roof mounted spare are that it'll increase fuel consumption, raise your centre of gravity, increase wind noise, and you'll be more prone to snag on low branches when off roading.

Or you could make a mount to have it against the rear of the cab.

I have a storage system in the tray of the Brumby, keep my 14inch spare under it, and also have a standard 13inch spare under the bonnet

Hey thanks fellas,
I like the idea of the roof racks, but i hadn't thought about all that raising the centre of gravity and stuff..
Definitely gives me a few ideas though.
Thanks again.

If you are going to put it on the roof the added weight up there wont make much difference to the CG as most 14in rims have extra offset which gives you a wider stance anabling more stability. Plus with Subaru Lift kits the body is raised and the main weight the engine and box and left at the smae road height its the tyres that provide the lift of the eingine

That's exactly the size wheel/tyre I'm trying to fit in at the moment and it definitely doesn't fit, plus I'll be putting bigger tyres on them soon. Not sure what a webber is though? engine?

I've also got 185/65 14 under the bonnet - I took out the spare wheel support bar and 'modified' it to allow more room. Just bash it with large hammer cos there's enough room under the bonnet...it will fit...honest!

I have this same problem tho i havnt done anything about it... yet
Webber is a brand of carby that alot of people on here use. in particular the 32/36 off a 2L ford cortina. give more power and allow a smaller air filter to be fitted

Ahhhh I see, thanks for the info Brumby Boy.
I had another go this arvo trying to squeeze the 185/65 R14 in there and actually succeeded. (with great difficulty) although it just about blocks access to the engine oil dipstick and with any bigger tyres there'd be no chance.
Think I like the idea of mounting it up against the back of the cabin the best so far...

...would also make room for when you fit a turbo ...

Ever thought of a rear mount wheel carrier we use on wagons? I think a brumby with one of these would look good, it'd also free up your tray space... Just a thought.

Yeah actually, I had thought about one of those rear mount systems, they usually have a jerry can holder on the other side don't they?
Anyone know who supplies them, or do they have to be custom made?

I am a great fan of silicon spray - that might help to get it in place !!
