How to polish Marquois Alloys?

Hey all,

I have a set of Marquios (spelling?) alloys that need a polish. I was wondering what was best to use as they are pretty grubby and seem to have dirt/some sort of rust imbedded in it.

I don't know if this would be any good, but could one of those polishing grinder discs be used or would this take off a/the finishing layer?
If the finishing layer is taken off, what's underneath and will it look any good?

Or is there some place i could take them to be checked out? I'm in bendigo but can get them to melbourne if need be.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... i'm up for a new set of tyres soon and would like to be putting these 14's back on ruby scoo.

Hey El Freddo,
I have a set of these also - Marquis. White coated. Always wondered what they would come up like polished?? :eek:

Closer inspection on mine, I have scuffing from driving too close to kerbs, so I think that this would show up more when stripped back.

I think it would require a fair bit of effort to get the clean, have to be careful with alloy with any stripper etc. Polishing with an air tool or dremel with paste would get there eventually, but after 4x wheels it would be a marathon effort.

To recoat, I would use POR15 white again or clear if polished. This stuff set as hard as nails.

I will have to dig up a decent photo and post it up, (think its on my old computer somewhere).

I use Autosol all over my polished wheels, comes up trumps every time. Lots of elbow grease is needed though.

What would you guys say was the best way to strip paint from alloy wheels?

thanks guys...

My rims also have scuff marks... i don't really care about them as my rims arn't exactly a set of show rims (best seen when spinning or from a distance i think).

Has anyone taken the finishing layer off? What i want to know about this is if they're like the old holden ones where if you took off the finishing layer (that alloy look finish) the metal below could be highly polished. I just want to know if this is possible to do without leaving circle patterns on the rim (which i think would look very poor)... And if the polishing disc (i mean one of those sanding discs, not a sheeps wool polishing disc) removes scuff marks a little i'll be happy, its just the end finish i'm worried about...

And subinator, how do you get white Marquis alloys? Has some one painted them, if so, do you know with what paint? This could be an alley to check out.

i polished alloys usind wet and dry sand paper just start with course say 400grit and gradually get finer and finer until u can't see any scratches

have heard big buffing wheel on an 8 inch grinder and heaps of tripoli polish stuff works the quickest least sweat, and messy.

I have used a caramel wheel to polish one of my turbo style mag. get em from panel suplie shops about 15 bucks and spin them in a drill.

also used rims on a wheel balancer using wet and dry and wd40 up to polish cloth for ripper shine, bit hard on trick fancy rim designs

Cheers everyone.

I think i'll try out the grinder sanding disc and see how that goes. As i've said, they're not show wheels, just so long as all of them look the same (but still in a good way) i'll be happy.

I'll try an let you all know how it goes with pics if i can (don't hold your breath, i've got a lot on, who doesn't these days?)

WHOOPS ! in big letters that was a buffing disc on a grinder not using the abrasive disc itself.

Get autosol from any car accesory retailer .. dab a bit on rub vigorously .. rub off with clean cloth .. polish's dull aloy to a mirror finish with effort .
Speiling mistakes .. me never !

And it sorta helps that uni's started back, i'll have some spare time between uni and work, might have to get the rims up here to help kill time.

think I am now the proud owner of these 'too wide for L Series' explains why the caps look a bit rough :)
