Repainting rims...
Hey all again,
Right, so my new car came with the spare in use, because one of the the existing 13inch sunraysias (sp) had cracked quite badly. So went an picked up some new second hand rims identical to the ones on the car (the sunraysias)....however like evrything steel their a bit rusty. Just wondering what have people done themselves, was thinking of taking to my 4 new rims with a wire brush on the angle grinder and just spraying them, or would powder coating be worth it? More for rust protection than anything else..any hot tips are welcome...
cheers

depends on how professional you want it and how much effort you want to put in.
I took to mine with a wire brush (very lazily) finished with a bit of sandpaper (very roughly) then taped the tyres with newspaper and sprayed the lot with white knight rust guard again
looks good enough for me, and when they're clean, look great from even a short distance :P (ie i didn't strip the paint back underneath, just buffed it and the scrubbed most of the rust off)

I sand-blasted my Pug's and had them powder-coated when I got them - but I've got ready access to both sand-blasting and powder-coating facilities
Either way, you'll still need to do some sanding to get a smooth finish. It all comes down to how picky you are, and how you're likely to treat the car...

I sanded my Pugs back to bare metal then a few coats of primer and then the paint. Was not after show room finish as that were going the car purely for 4WD. After about 18 months of 4WD with these rims I can say that the paint (black) has started to fade and there are chips in the paint, some serious 1’s to I might add.
My only tip would be to make sure that you put some hardening compound/agent in your primer and/or paint.
Not wanting to hijack the thread however would it be the same process for alloy rims?
(Note I know that you can have the alloy rims sandblasted and power coated however how successful would sanding and painting alloy be compared to steel).

Yes, same process. One of the guys at work did a mates 18" Skyline GTS rims just before I did my Pugs, and no problems at all with sand-blasting or powder-coating. The sand-blasting gives an excellent adhesive finish for painting or powder-coating.

rang around for some qoutes today, looking at 50 bucks a rim sand blasted and powder coated....which is 300 all up for 4 rims (inc what i paid for them)....so thinking i might go the home method, and attack them with the wire brush on the grinder, ill put a pick up when im done if their note worthy...
cheers

If you are patient and have a heap of time on your hands some good results can be had using one of the cheap sand blasting units brought from Supachump or a place like it. First use paint stripper on them although if they are already powder coated you may have to use a bit. Once clean and ready to paint use a high end 2 pac single colour in both primer and topcoat and you will have a nice wheel ready for another 20years
