I notice some guys are going for a 15 inch and 16 inch wheels with low profile tyres. I was thinking a second set of wheels 14 inch with either Super Trippers 674mm OD or 185R 14C with a 669mm OD. They are both close to 27 inch I believe, closer than my 185R 13C 626mm OD.
What are the advantages of 15 inch and 16 inch wheels with lower tyres ?
I have always believed in the sand or desert, even hill climbs it is better to have more of a balloon effect happening at say 15pi and below. I have been as low as 12 psi and went through the softest boggiest sand with 14" 185/75/14's.
I have done Fraser in 13" and 14" wheels, 3 different Surarus, atleast a dozen times, cant get enough of the place. I am going again for the January clean up day for 4wd pple. Half price barge and free camping for three days ! Bargain !

There are a lot of tires that are available for 15" wheels that aren't available for 14s, such as BFGoodrich Mud Terrains and Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs.
I've chosen 215/75/15 BFGoodrich Mud Terrains and they don't work out that much taller than the 27x850x14 BFG ATs that I had on there before.

Practice. 13 inch wheels 205/65/13 tyres at Rainbow Beach Barge Heading to Frazer for a Look around. Sorry about repeat posts, I was not getting the image posted just an x in a box. Still working it all out.
This MY was great, it also had 14" speedies, 195/75/14 tyres and "no lift" just wound up suspension. I found road tyres, half worn were best in sand. Had two sets of wheels with this one.
Looking to do lots to my L Series now and Tyre/Wheel options is one. [/img]
Yep Smoov, with a light car, Super Trippers are "best bang for buck" I had them on a sierra and they were almost indestructable. I did never even get a flat tyre.
BFG's were the same on heavier vehicle I had. I think I will go 14" speedies and Super Trippers. I will start trimming guards in New Year.

Yeah wouldn't mind speedies but don't how i'd go without aftermarket springs or lift kit. Bloke priced me $92 each for speedy's in Brisbane.
But kerry i want to know if anyone still sells those 205/65 u mentioned?
Would that be a better option if I was to stick to the 13" rims or would 18575 R13 be better?

185/70/R13 works good, particularly liked the toyo snow&steel brand, but used honcooks too. used this size for many years, including trips to NT/WA.
have now graduated to 14" wheels tho...
I believe low-profile tyre is strictly for the sealed road.....where you want to minimize any balloon effect.....

Gardiner. I do not think 205/65's are the best option, they only give you an OD of 622mm. I have 185R13's on my L series and they have a OD of 626mm. You could do as well with 13 inch rims.
I ran some 205/65/13's on the red sub in picture and barely made it to Happy Valley where the barman got a spanner and we wound up the standard suspension.
The next trip I had 195/75/14's on speedies, but if you have and L series they may scrape without a lift. They measured 648mmOD
The Super Trippers (Nankangs) have an OD of 674mm and they scrape with a 2 inch lift.
I took my 185R13's offroad yesterday and went to Byfield National Park and Nine Mile Beach.
The Rangers even warned me the track was soft and deep ahead, but as usual I figure if you can drive into trouble and stop you can always back out turn around and exit the way you came in.
I was happy to report we made it the hard way to the beach and came back the easy way, no issues or bogs at all.
If you are going off road without a lift, make sure you cover the holes in your bash plate or you will have more problems with sand in your motor than you can deal with.
I used some rubber like they use to make stone guards for the back of big 4wd's towing caravans to stop stone throws and a big tube of silastic, trim it close so it does not catch fire on the exhaust, mine does not get hot at all.
I think the 205/65's refered to earlier in the thread were on 15'rims with a lift on the vehicle. Just flick back and check. These offer a lot of offroad options like BFG's which cost $250 plus each tyre.
With no lift on Peugeot 14" rims a good option might be some195/70/14's with an OD of 628mm and may only scrape with hard driving but would be nothing to worry about.
These are a pretty standard road tyre you can buy for as little as $89 each new from Bob Jane. I used to get them second hand from wreckers or tyre retailers scrap heap, some people change their tyres long before they need to for no apparent reason.
Second hand and in good roadworthy condition you should only pay about $20 each fitted free for 195/70/14's. Good Luck.

PS.>Gardiner, I checked the tyre measure and 205/65/13's have an OD of only 597mm and thats not enough for any sub in the sand. Just ask me..lol..

Iagree with the above comments regarding tyre profire (height) For offroad work particlaly sand work ,a higher profile is definitely the go.
Subaru standard is a 70 profile tyre minimum so i guess thats trying to suggest something???????
I run el cheapo bob jane specials 185/75/14s on speedies on a unlifted L sreies on the beach (sunshine coast/ fraser is) and never had any problems with them. They do scrape the top of the wheel arch occasionally but only on hard thumps on the suspension. (95% of the time i find a simple reduction in speed resolves this small inconvenience)
This is with 2 adults and 2 strapping teenagers with all associated surf sand and electronic toys( that simply cannot under any circunstances be left behind!!) strapped onto the top sides and back of wagon.

The 185/80/13's I am running 626mm OD, are a poor substitute for a 14 inch rim. I think she scrapes a bit more due to the belly on the bigger tyre squishing down on thumps in soft sand, because of the 13inch rim, air displacement for want of a better word than squishing.
I have a 2"lift and want to get some sand tyres (road type) second hand to trial bigger sizes, say 215/70/14's. I will get some second hand ones to trial for scraping first 657mm OD. Should work I hope , it can be trial and error, but we can all learn from someone elses trials.
