Hahaha ive read the horror stories about the 3.0 TD GU and its tendency to grenade itself, i would love an 80 series landcrusher but they are too expensive for the amount of kms on them..

Don't touch any of the early 3.0l gu patrols.

Buy a 4.2td GQ. Awesome ride.

Yep there is, im tempted depends how much money i can borrow to fit into my budget, would love a landcruiser over a patrol.

Yeah im staying way clear of the 3.0l GU's, dont wanna buy a grenade:P
There isn't much choice of 4.2TD GQ's on carsales, clean nice ones are hard to find:(

There's a reason for that too...!

Shame to see the subi go after all that work you've put in, I'm sure you'll enjoy a big fourby. Have you spent much time test driving any of them?

After I wrote my first subi off I almost went to a big 4wd but after test driving a few I realised it just wasn't for me!

Yeah my dad has a GQ Patrol ive driven a few times, it deffinately doesnt handle like a small suby but its tolerable, been in a few patrols with friends doing some pretty nuts climbs and rock crawling, its heaps of fun and i want in:)

they get boring after a while though. (they are a nice change dont get me wrong)

i went from a heavily modded l-series (extremely capable for a subi) to a patrol shorty GQ 4.2 petrol, soo much torque, soo much fuel but i had it modded moderatly hardcore, it got boring cos it could go everywhere i pointed it and took very little skill.

Now im in a subaru 4x4 again....a gen3 outback infact. The only reason id change back to a bigger 4x4 is for more space. I was toying around with the idea of a 100series cruiser the other day, but changed my mind and realised a subaru is the best for my situation.

Your outback is superior to a cruiser or patrol on beach/sandwork so keep that in mind. Personally id choose a 4.2 patrol they are so much better than cruisers. The petrol version is mental too.

Sad to see you move away from subis but have fun wherever you go.

I dunno here, my brothers GQ petrol patrol struggled along the same beach my car eats for breakfast, but he didn't have his tyres aired down when i was with him, it was spinning wheels and high in the revs the whole time we were there and going nowhere, he didn't wanna drop the revs because it was surely gonna bog down, he had to drive up into the dune vegetation and bush bash to turn around and head back, didn't wanna risk turning in the sand...For the moment im keeping the outback, had no interest in it yet..

Did 2 small camping mods in the last 2 days, mounted this rechargable fluro to the rear tailgate, sits on 2 cup hooks:

Puts out an awesome amount of light, not sure how long the charge lasts for and its only 240V
chargable, but for $20 from the reject shop im not
complaining.

Also made another camping part for the car today, one ive needed to do for a long time,
i made a mosquito net for the rear so i can sleep with the boot open
on warm nights, bought a cone shaped net and tied
fishing line to 4 points on the bottom, 2 of the points have
line and sinker attached and run along the side of the car
and go over the rear tyres into the tread grooves
to hold the net in place but have enough slack when the
net is lifted that they dont fall out of the tread on the tyres.
The other 2 lines are on the back to keep the net down at the tailgate,
access to the car is easy as lifting the net and getting in,
there is no way the mozzies can get in now.

If you wanna do the same thing i used this net:

You just slip half the net over the tailgate (like your putting a dress on:P)
Rest the circle bit on top of the net on the top of your tailgate, it sits good on top because of the angle the tailgate opens too it won't move anywhere.
Tie 2 sinkers with a bit of fishing line around the bottom edge of the net that drapes over the opening on the tailgate give it enough slack to allow for a bit of movement etc, i ran another 2 lines down the side of the net and draped the line over the tyres into the tread pattern with a sinker on the end of each line to keep the side of the net sealed to the car, works great, easily pulled off the car and packed away in 30 seconds:)

ive driven and owned the worst and best of both worlds and i know if i had to pick one to rely upon, it would be the old GQ with 15psi in the tyres.

(alot of people on here choose not to believe it though)

having said that, im back in a subaru and i love taking her on the beach in comfort and its more than capable for 90% of the work i do.

Perhaps not in pure performance no they arent. They are pretty close though and a lot of the time better, depends how the cars are set up.

But where they are undeniably superior is the fun factor. It is so much more fun to dominate the dunes in a subi where you can just burn around and have a blast, as apposed to a "heavy" where most of the time you chug around and it just gets old real quick.

Also the stares from the heavy drivers are priceless.

Yep like on our last trip, All the big cruisers, triton, hilux and even an H2 were struggling as we just floated up the dune with ease and stop on top to look at their fair few failed attempts to get up the dune:)

beach driving is all about power to weight. wheel travel, crawler gears and big tyres arent required.

I have driven plenty of both on sand and I would take a well setup suby any day.

I have just come back from a week on Fraser Is, in a Navara and my son was in a GT Forester and i know who had the most comfortable trip, and it wasn't me.

Was the navara not so nice in the sand? My boss has a Navara and went to Fraser last year with a Jayco Dove in tow and loved it.

Went camping at a spot called Farquhar Park on friday night, a few NSW members might know the area it was my first visit to the area and i didn't wanna leave, access to the spot is only by 4x4 on low tide along a 11km stretch of beach, such a nice relaxing quiet spot with great fishing, we should organise a club camping trip there.
