Another EJ MY Coupe

Post by legacytt » Sat Nov 11, 2006 1:16 pm

Picked up this car at a wrecker for $300. I has a suprisingly good body except for a small rust spot near the rear window. When I picked it up it was missing a front door but managed to track it down to another tassie board member who kindly exchanged it for another I located. Thanks Tassyraider.

Since then I completely stripped all mechanicals out of it and fitted the following.

EJ18 including all wiring so it now runs all the imprezza/Lib lighting/wiper systems on the steering column, along with the Imprezza dash cluster.

Liberty 3.9 Dual Range Gearbox and matching rear diff.Mounted this to a wagon rear end with the torsion bars wound as low as possible. The wagon fuel tank was also used.

Used a combination of Liberty auto tailshaft at the front and a shortened L series rear section, mounting the centre bearing with custom brackets.

I also completed the 5 stud conversion which enabled the RS liberty rims to fit and finish the car off nicely. The front was done with XT6 arms and adjustable radius rods which give nice negative camber, although the extra castor meant the front of the guards needed a slight trim to clear the 205/60/15 tyres. It has rear handbrake as a result of this.

The car goes well and will be an easy conversion to EJ20T as I can just swap in a WRX front loom. Have it all in the shed when the time comes.

Looks very tidy, nice work, makes me regret the lack of time currently preventing my finishing my tourer.

What did the XT6 gear set you back?

What a fantastic looking car. Don't the coupes look awesome. My aim is for the same with a N/A EJ20.
Did you end up using XT-6 parts all round for the 5 stud conversion?
Love to see some other pics of the engine bay and interior.

Thanks for all the comments folks.

The XT6 arms came from Mechawagon, they are the same as L series just have the bigger ball joint setup allready. You can machine L series ones easily enough. I have used all Liberty stuff for the Hubs/Brakes. The front is using the imprezza struts with the coupe strut top. Needed to apply a bit of clearance to the top of the strut tower so the springs clear as they are not as centred as they are in the MY standard setup. The rear involved fitting the spline from the MY drum into a Lib hub and then modifying the backing plate to use the MY mounting holes. I have used a Lib handbrake lever and cables. It all lines up in the console, looks just like a bought one.

What are people doing for the front sway bar when they have EJ boxes in MY's? The crossmember I have fabricated interferes with the original swaybar mount.

As for colour Mick, we were going to change it, but after a quick wash it looks a lot better and matches the RS rims well so we will stick with it. Need to fix the rust spot under the rear window so will have to paint some of it.

I like! what axles are under the front of it?

didn't know that ben still had those XT6 bits (which came from Ashburton NZ back in 2000 I believe.) that makes it a VERY easy swap especailly for the rear end. I used the hubs on mine and it was very easy.

rust in the rear window seems to be a common probelm on those. everyone I looked at had it for some reason in the passenger corner.

The front driveshafts are shortened Lib/Imprezza ones, due to the complete Hub change and the increase in track I couldn't use any of the MY shaft setup.
