The Super Sherpa - Project in Planning

Post by BaronVonChickenPants » Fri Dec 16, 2005 12:02 am

I've been leaking details long enough, thought it's about time I let you all in on it.

How it started:
I scored this sherpa for free with a spare motor and gearbox, it's got a little rust, the paint and interior are a bit rough but all in all it's pretty good, especially for free :D

Stock specs:
Engine: EK42 2 cylinder 660cc SOHC carb
G'box: 4 speed manual
Weight: 560Kg Tare
Brakes: Front Discs, Rear Drums
Seats: 2 with aftermarket rear seat available...if your lucky.

Some Pictures
This is what it looked like when I got it:
Image

Then gave it a wash, while it was wet it looked really good but once it dried it went back to how it was: :(
Image

And just in case anyone was wondering:

The Plans
If all goes to plan It's going to be a crazy little car.

I want to use a super charged EN07 engine from a Subaru Vivio/Pleo/R2 which have a stock output of a very restricted 47Kw and about 54Nm.

They're a 16 valve DOHC MPFI 4 cylinder 660cc inline 4 and if you get the right one they come with a 6 speed gearbox

I'd like to remove all restrictions, add a free flowing exhaust, RS water to air intercooler, water/methanol injection, replace the belt driven water pump with an electric pump, and hopefully run around 10psi from the supercharger even if that means upgrading from the standard AMR300 and possibly cam reprofiling.

If/when the engine requires a rebuild I will consider overboring, o-ringing, etc.

The goal is around 100Kw, to get this to the ground I'd like to upgrade from the stuck 135/70R12 cheese cutters to something like around the 200mm wide mark, but it's really hard to find a low profile 13" tyre, the only thing I've found so far that I'm happy with is a goodyear race series tyre for GT and production cars, it's 20/9.5-13 which works out to about 235/40R13 and requires a 13x7" rim. Legality for road use may be questionable though.

A quick/rough measurement said the PCD is 4x100 which means theres a plethora of aftermarket rims available.

Obviously the stock brakes and suspension will need some attention, I haven't got as far as this yet.

This is a long term project, still lots of stuff to work out, it won't even have any time or money spent on it till the EJ project is finished.

And of course there'll be plenty of conversations with engineers before I even get started.

As always open to suggestions, but if you're just going to say don't bother/why/it's not worth it I couldn't give a rats :P ....keep it constructive fellas.

Remember that these cars were available with 4wd in Japan, so i recon it would be nice to put that in as well. Can everyone say 'GO-KART'? :D

On a serious side, I saw a review of a mid nineties supercharged vivio, and the guy was rapped, the only downside was a VERY bumpy ride (small wheelbase, stiff suspension).

Good luck

I'd love to have 4WD but from what I've heard those drivetrains only go into the 4WD body's. :(

And yeah I'm not expecting anything close to a magic carpet ride

nice project man, love the little subys, i have a justy (which is more of a suzuki apparently) push button 4wd that needs a 'charger or something, 1.2 sohc carby goes pretty hard but needs boost aye, which either means getting an efi inlet manifold made up, sussing the carby as a suck-through, or getting a diahatsu charade blow-through.

i didn't realise that the en07 was dohc and 16 valve, nice! and six speed g/box would rock.

i have always wondered how many 'gems' you could find if you went on a trip to japan and had some good engine contacts, there must be a few good 'uns lying around aye...

Or you could just bin everything mechanical and tick the option box for the EJ20T....

hey thats pretty mad!, not too sure how my 'poor enough as it is' auto electrical skills would handle all that 'spagettii'?

what breed are those dudes, thats some broken england what!

the GT-legs 'go-cart' comment was pretty applicable too, if the justy fails its next warrant it is getting the body chopped off, lowered and then blown, would be good to make the wheelbase longer, i have this fascination with superchargers that won't rest until i have played with one....

I still think the build of that justy is as scary as hell and I wouldn't be seen dead in it.

You can still supercharge a carby it's just tricker to tune.

The AMR300 from the EN07 would be perfect for the justy, there was talk on the old board about modifying the SPFI from camira's to suit EA series motors, I reckon this has potential in your situation as well.

Once I've finished my EJ tourer I'd like to have a look into the camira setup for my white wagon.

The EN07 N/A version is SOHC it's only the supercharged version thats DOHC.

I was going to say something else too but forgot what it was :(

been there. done that.

here in Canada the justy got the 1.2 L 3 banger.

i threw a turbo from the EA82T's at it, and ran 10 PSI...Thing went like a bat outta hell.

my guess was 1700 lbs, and 125 hp.

Post by soobygus » Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:53 am

sidewayz,
did you set the carby up to be suck-through into the turbo? did you alter comp ratio? intercooler? and did you tap into an oil feed for the turbo- where abouts?

to many questions, arrrggghhh!!

i have a primary turbo out of a twin turbo legacy/liberty that could also do the trick...

how long did the 1.2 3 cylinder engine last like that?

cheers,
Gus.

Intercooler..i was running a Swift GT intercooler

the engine lasted a good while. i never really got around to tunign it properly. One day it'll make ti back to the road

I admire the people willing to take on challenges others think they are too big for. When you get this machine going, I would be honoured to see it's results. If help is required, don't hesitate to ask. I don't know much, but help comes in many forms.

I hope you and others know that when you r looking for parts or ideas, there are many people from many origins with similar interests that frequent possible suppliers. Interstate or not, we can all help each other. Why else are we here?

Sounds like a serious achievement, to go efi, I haven't even considered how I'm doing that side of it yet, well done just the same.

Thanks GTLegs, I think later on you may be recieving many messages.

Thanks also wildhorse, it is great having such a good support community, I think we all take it for granted how good AUSubaru really is, THANKS BRETT :D

I'll continue the conversation I was having via PM here.

EFI: camira - 1227808 ecu with a VN memcal retuned for the EN07
,make a custom harness for it or use the camira item as its mostly separate from the car and easy to remove. mount the ECU under a seat (passenger is where mine is.) using a bracket for a N13 pulsar. leave the diagnostic plug where it is.

FUEL SYSTEM:
take the tank out take it to a radiator shop that fixes fuel tanks. have them put a swirl pot inside the tank. modify the fuel sender to take two fuel lines and a vent line. use the vent system that is in the side wall above the fuel filler. find a later KM3 (87 will do) and grab the filler neck off it. these are unleaded and have the correct filler for the engineer.
run bigger lines in place of the factory ones( 3 of them) - helps if you have a tubing bender.

WIRING:
use a later harness and remove most of the carby engine wiring. if you do a custom harness for the EFI integrate it back into this harness.
mine is a mix of commodore and pulsar relay panels reworked with the correct connectors. looks factory when you pop the bonnet. redo the headlights whilst you are at it. they need brighter bulbs and if you swap to the later front you can do halogens or HID if you like. use the square lights from a RA60 celica of mitsi express van. these have a H4 bulb in them.

fix the inside light so it works with the doors. the justy (KA6) has this option and the later car (87 KM3 ) has it as well although they deleted the switch in the door. find a suitable switch ( I used mitsi lancer) and do both doors the holes are there for them.

ENGINE MOUNTING:

lots of fun here. you need the side mount off a fiori for one the rest is make as you go. gear linkage is a mix and match affair.

WHEELS:

13x6 minilites are available for it as are 13x6 tyres. tyres are used on a morris mini and are $250 each. mine uses mazda 323 for the time being.

BRAKES:

fidn something that fits and use it. mine is a mix of mazda 323 and 929 discs (F&R)

theres more to it but thats all I can remember.
