Dobo's awesome $390 L series
As much as ive tried i cannot get the crankshaft bolt off to replace the timing belts. I've tried the breaker bar and cranking the engine over, and also jamming it in gear but its well stuck.
the belts look fine so i dont really need to replace them, but it seems a shame while its all apart to have to do it again in 40k kms time!

you could invest in one of these

the 22mm socket goes on one end and brute force from a hammer is applied at the other end
it pays for itself the first time you use it

crankshaft = easy... long breaker bar jam it against the floor or a chassis rale and crank the engine over quickly... never had a problem once i was let in on this little trick....

Well I got her all back together for the trip 2 weekends ago, but had to turn back. The brakes and engine weren't right. So I've now fixed the brakes and part of the engine problems(inlet manifold wasn't sealed right),yet the engine is making a huge ticking noise, more so clunking. I've sourced the sound to around the distributor. Not sure where to go from here.
Its just one thing after another, I still can't hate her though!

While I can't help with the clunking - I can tell you that you'll get there!dobo wrote:Its just one thing after another, I still can't hate her though!
And as for the cobaw trip and a stock L - you have to start somewhere!! We left a couple of the subi's behind on one track simply because we knew that they were not up for it. This track was the one where you see Ruby Scoo and Subaruby working away at it through the middle of the video Also you've got to start somewhere!
You'll get there!
Cheers

Don't stress about it - we've all got to start somewhere. The next trip could be in the lerderderg area Time will tell.dobo wrote:Im kicking myslef that i didnt get there.
I doubt they'd have any idea.dobo wrote:With this engine noise im thinking of just taking it to a mechnic. I really have no idea and just want her ready!
What sort of clunking noise? Try using a long screw driver or socket extension to listen to where the noise is coming from. If it's in the cam box its probably a lifter doing an odd tick. If it's coming from above the cylinder (which will be tricky to get to) it could be piston slap or a big end bearing. Been thrashing the engine when using it?

Engine out gives you loads of room to move and look at it from different angles.dobo wrote:Yeah i did do the screwdriver trick, its coming from the cam box area. Looks like ill be taking the head off then on the weekend, is engine out the easiest way?
Before you go doing that check the tension of the bolts on the end of the cam gear - I once forgot to do mine up tight and they made one hell of a noise that sounded like a leprechaun in there with a BFH or jack hammer going off. They were really loose to the point that they snapped and I had ovalled out the holes for the bolts - new cam gear required and three new bolts too! Bloody lucky it didn't take off somewhere else!
I don't see the dizzy being the culprit - but if you have another one it would be worth swapping it in to see if there's a difference. I also can't remember if there's a retaining nut on the end of the dizzy that holds its timing gear on it. I'm done with dizzys so I'm a little hazy about the EA82's unit...
It could be something very small such as that cam sprocket bolts - make sure there's a dowel in there too

Ha... never thought of that one!littlewhiteute wrote:I've seen a lot of different timing belt engines with rattling hydraulic lash adjusters. Most of the time, a sloppy timing belt is the cause.
Here's hoping its something as simple as this - if the cam belt is loose it could be the reason why it wouldn't run properly for you on your way up to the 4wd trip. Maybe...
