Just wondering about the numbers on the speedo. The 1 at 45kmh, the 2 at 80kmh and the 3 at 110kmh... im guessing its a shift guide since i dont have a tacho... what sort of revs would it be doing at those speeds?
And does anyone have the hillhold function i read about in the user manual?
Cheers, Stretch.

yes, either max or recommended shift max, never thought what the revs might read. It is not a good idea to contnue those markers as a guide when swap up to a five speed from an L Series - I get a lot of valve bounce in second getting to the mark
I think hill holder is an L Series/Vortex only thing ?

Stretch, kind of a guide. The numbers on your speedo indicate the maximum speed you should be doing in each gear. This is subject to everything being standard, i.e. tyre, rims, driveline, etc.. The best way is to by yourself a small tacho and mount it somewhere close to eye level, so as you don't need to strain (or take too much time) to look at it. Not sure what RPMs these would be at but it's faily high, so recommend you don't try it to often on an old engine.
The 'Hill-Holder' is not available on the EA81 (M.Y.) model. It came out in the EA82 (L.Series) model and continued on throughout the EJ (Liberty, Impreza, Forester) models. You could try and fit one from the L.Series but you'd need to reposition you heater tap and make up new brake pipelines.

You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

Those recommended highest gear speeds are really pushing it IMO, the closest I ever got to the number 2 mark in 2nd gear was going down a slight incline I got up to about 70...and I thought the engine was about to explode all over the road so I changed

Will it ever end!?

Another reason to fit your twin carb twin port engine so we can all find out - you must be bursting !Silverbullet wrote:Those recommended highest gear speeds are really pushing it IMO, the closest I ever got to the number 2 mark in 2nd gear was going down a slight incline I got up to about 70...and I thought the engine was about to explode all over the road so I changed

Mine runs a K&N on the standard carb with a 2.25" sports setup and highflow cat and it still kills themashleyn wrote:My standard Brumby with Weber Carb can smash those numbers.

Not hard if the engine's in good condition, using good clean oil and platinums helps too, plus 98RON. I've had it as high as 85 in 2nd before, but it's not the healthiest sounding thing in the world :P Don't want to kill the old bitch so I haven't tried it again.

I seem to recall thinking a 4 cyl sounding like these do at as little as 4800 rpm - that is sort of old Ford pre cross flow straight six redline - mine did 6000 in first `80kph, 110 in 2nd,145 3rd , 190 in top up an incline - certain the tacho read less each gear.
These things just not meant to rev unless they are the twin port twin carb beast, they don't rev like any other inline four either!

Thinking of changing my front drivers side cv shaft. The boot has been rooted for ages and its finally started making some interesting noises. I think the pin that holds the shaft to the transaxle might have fallen out aswell :s That would lead to rattling when you back off right?
Any special tools/tips and tricks for the change?
Cheers, Stretch.

The noise when backing off is probably the dry CV joint (or whats left of it) rattling in its cup.

Now that you filled it with mud it will really start to get noisy, that happened on my old Rodeo I had.
My standard, good condition EA81 hits those numbers easy too, I also tried it just the one time for laughs:).
I was driving thru Ardlethan in my truck a couple weeks back & spied ya puttin along in ya Brumby. That visor looks good in real life, has me considering one now.
Cheers Jake

Haha cheers Jake. Yeah its usually parked in the park parking lot across from our shop (parkparkpark). Theres a few in Ardlethan. 2 blokes have red ones and the local mechanic bought, fixed and offloaded a white targa top one recently.
I'm kinda glad the mud finished off the cv. I've had the replacement one in the shed since i bought the ute! Now i've got reason to do it. (Plus its motivated me to do some stuff to my VL incase it takes a while to replace the joint).

Changed the cv shaft yesterday. It wasn't too bad but i still managed to fit some swearing in.

First up loosen your wheel nuts and the pop the split pin out of the crown nut...then loosen it. It's 36mm and mine was bloody tight, i nearly lifted the ute off the ground.
Then jack it up and take the wheel off.

Undo the brake caliper bolts and tie the brakes up to the spring.

Slide the hub off. Might take some jiggling. Then take the brake dust cover off.

Get a 6mm drift or punch and knock the roll pin out of the cv at the gearbox.
Then with a rubber mallet give the shaft a hit and knock it free of the bearings.
I didn't have much luck with the hub ball joint so i just popped the tie rod end ball joint out. I undid the two bolts in the sway bar looking thing and then unbolted the whole arm from the body mount.
This gave me room to pull the hub out and off the shaft. Then i yanked the shaft off of the ute and chucked it.
Putting back together was just a reverse process, just remember to gease bolts and the new axle where it slides through the hub, to help stop rust, dirt etc stuffing the threads.
Unfortunately i didn't take many pics of the reassembly because i was hurrying and geasy haha.
Cheers, Stretch.

Cleaned and painted the hubs silver and cleaned a heap of mud out of the wheel arches and the rims. Got the shudder out of it!
I also ran a couple of 6mm earths off the battery. My lights dim alot when revs are low so i thought better earths might be a good start.
And a pic of the tacho i installed a few weeks back.

Good to see how many revs it's doing.
Might get some pics of the wiring incase anyone wants to see how they hook up.
Cheers, Stretch.
