my experience with cheaper non genuine HG's V's Subaru is that every genuine HG has been retorqued and taken zip.nada, nyet, nothin whereas the others have all needed just a little bit more. Given access to the head bolts is not straightforward with rocker gear getting in the way, fewer times you need to get in there the better. Genuine just exude quality looky feely.
Degreaser, lots of degreaser
Gave the motor a quick scrub and came up pretty nicely.
I have a brand new alternator waiting to go on so I sprayed up the old one to see what it would look like but I think it kills it. (don't think alternators should be painted) the polished look personally is the way they should be. The oil pan is the only thing I have left to paint (black). Definitely will not be painting the heads.
In the last pic I wanted to get an overall idea of what it was going to look like so I slapped the parts on. Apart from that alternator im pretty happy with the blue I chose.

Thanks for putting the pic up bennie. I've got mixed feelings about the alternator to be honest. It's growing on me. It may stay on the car untill it dies. It still works ok. About painting the block I don't think so. Just gonna keep her clean. If anything a clear coat but even than I don't think so.

I like alternators better when they're clean and not painted, looks more stock and untouched. Since you are so keen on keeping this wagon looking stock and original I would have thought even painting the P/steer and pulley brackets would be a bit much but then I guess I just like the look of plain metal.
Will it ever end!?

The motor will be original just some parts painted. Don't think it's a big deal. And as to keeping it all stock and original, Yes the majority will be but there will be some slight mods. At the end of the day it's no where near a collectors vehicle ATM and I bought it to enjoy and use not preserve it for a museum.

Its only a few bolt on bits, easy to bring back to standard colour if desired. Personally, I like some colour in the engine bay. Next you need some matching blue HT leads1983wagon wrote:The motor will be original just some parts painted

Dropped my heads off Wednesday to get pressure tested and resurfaced and picked em up today. Still waiting for my gaskets from frog and my carby rebuilt.
So close to getting it back on the road

Almost there
So what ive been up to and a list of things ive done since I bought it.
Brand new tyres
Brand new radiator
Heads shaved and pressure tested
All new gaskets
Eagle leads (on there way)
ngk spark plugs
all hoses replaced.
Painted just about everything. ( I love a bright engine bay)
I am still waiting for my carby he says hes 3 quarters of the way through it.. that's what happens when you get a mate to do it. I regret saying just do it in your free time lol.
I know what most people will say " you could have EJ'd it for that money."
well ever since ive started workin on this motor ive fell in love with the lil ea81 and have no regrets.
may not be everyones cup of tea with all the colours in the engine bay but that's just my weird taste.. in person the bay looks amazing.
But most the work is done now and once the carby is back its just a matter of hooking it up and getting her started. Shes all freshened up and should run like new
